Publisher's Summary

The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the 20th century.

A nostalgic tale from Middle Earth

An appropriate entry point for children & young adults into the mythical world of Middle Earth, 'The Hobbit' is an easy tale to listen to & narrated enthusiastically by Rob Inglis, who breathes life into the various characters.

It's a marvel that he's able to give each dwarf their own distinct voice. I'm less fond of the vocals for the various songs sung in the story, although Dwarf & Hobbit singing probably isn't as fair as Elves' voices.

I read this book as a teenager, watched the Peter Jackson trilogy as an adult & listened to the audio book as a father. As they say, "three times a charm" & I certainly agree!

Hard to read and just as hard to listen to

Tolkien has always been difficult to read, even though the effort has been rewarding, the effort can be exhausting. Listening to The Hobit is also exhausting to listen to. Too many distractions in the story line to be an enjoyable listen😕

Books are ALWAYS Better than Films!!!!

I loves this audios books, Precious!

The narrator has a very soft voice so it is great for anyone who has sound intolerance like me, because his voice is easy on the ears.

I'm going to read The Lord of the Rings next and I am SO excited to discover the story!

I am pretty disgusted by the films now, Peter Jackson clearly only made these films for Hollywood and a few million dollars in his pocket.

The storyline in the books is so much better than the movies, it makes no sense to me why he would keep the situations but change their context completely? -when the way the book was intended to be told was far better than Jacksons b**t**dised version.

THERE AREN'T EVEN ANY ORKS IN THE HOBBIT FOR F**KS SAKE (nor is Legolas!!!!!).

I am actually kind of terrified to discover how badly PJ messed up LOTR!!!

The Spoiling of a Beloved story.

l have read the novel several times. Heard part of it read by Tolkien himself. So really hated the narration, pedantic and pretty boring. The singing and music particularly off putting. Also it is so loud the music at the end. Missed lots of the story because the voice was droning on. Still love the story but think I will read it myself. Tolkien read it so well, interestingly with passion and expression. This was painful and awful.😪

Decent if you can put up with singing

I don’t understand why narrators can’t simply read out written songs as poems instead of tediously improvising a melody. Also some character voices were inconsistent, which made listening a little confusing at times. I’m not a huge fan of outlandish character voices and this had a little of that, but nothing too terrible; at least there was no falsetto.
