Story
Economics is broken. It has failed to predict, let alone prevent, financial crises that have shaken the foundations of our societies. Its outdated theories have permitted a world in which extreme poverty persists while the wealth of the super-rich grows year on year. And its blind spots have led to policies that are degrading the living world on a scale that threatens all of our futures. Can it be fixed?

Any ambitious proposal - ranging from fixing crumbling infrastructure to Medicare for all or preventing the coming climate apocalypse - inevitably sparks questions: how can we afford it? How can we pay for it? Stephanie Kelton points out how misguided those questions really are by using the bold ideas of modern monetary theory (MMT), a fundamentally different approach to using our resources to maximise our potential as a society.

Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Story
After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system - a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The audiobook analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework. Using examples from politics, films, fiction, work, and education, it argues that capitalist realism colours all areas of contemporary experience.

It is worse, much worse, than you think. The slowness of climate change is a fairy tale, perhaps as pernicious as the one that says it isn't happening at all, and if your anxiety about it is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible, even within the lifetime of a teenager today.

Story
Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. It is innovation that will shape the 21st century. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen alike. Matt Ridley argues that we need to see innovation as an incremental, bottom-up, fortuitous process that happens as a direct result of the human habit of exchange, rather than an orderly, top-down process developing according to a plan.

Publisher's Summary
An urgent, workable plan to confront climate change and transform America's economy for a post-fossil fuel world from the New York Times best-selling author of The Third Industrial Revolution.
A new vision for America’s future is quickly gaining momentum. The Green New Deal has caught fire in activist circles and become a central focus in the national conversation, setting the agenda for a new political movement that will likely transform the entire US and world economy. Although the details remain to be hashed out, it has inspired the millennial generation, now the largest voting bloc in the country, to lead America on the issue of climate change.
While the Green New Deal has become an overnight sensation, it takes on added weight in lieu of a parallel movement within the global business community that is going to shake the very foundation of society over the next several years. Behind the scenes, the key sectors that make up the infrastructure of the global economy are quickly decoupling from fossil fuels and recoupling with solar and wind energies that are now near parity in cost and soon to be far cheaper. New studies are sounding the alarm about the prospect of 100 trillion dollars in stranded assets as the economy abandons the old energies of the 20th century for the new cheaper green energies of the 21st century, creating a carbon bubble that is likely to burst by 2028 - leading to the collapse of the fossil fuel civilization.
This great disruption is occurring because the marketplace is speaking. Every government will have to follow the market or face the consequences. Governments that lead in the scale-up of a new zero-carbon green infrastructure and create the new business opportunities and employment that accompany it will stay ahead of the curve. Governments that fail to lead will be doomed.
In The Green New Deal, New York Times best-selling author and renowned economic and social theorist Jeremy Rifkin delivers the political narrative, technical framework, and economic plan for the debate now taking center stage across America. The concurrence of a stranded fossil fuel assets bubble and a green political vision opens up the possibility of a massive global paradigm shift into a post-carbon ecological era, hopefully in time to prevent a temperature rise that will tip us over the edge into runaway climate change. With 25 years of experience at the forefront of enacting green transitions for both the European Union and the People’s Republic of China, Rifkin offers his indispensable wisdom in a blueprint for how to transform the global economy and save life on Earth.
Critic Reviews
“An influential advisor to governments the world over and a prolific author in areas of societal importance, Rifkin delivers a passionate vision and practical narrative, based on his extensive experience implementing pioneering changes throughout the European Union and People’s Republic of China.” (Booklist)
“An urgent endorsement of efforts to remake a doomed fossil-fuel economy before it's too late.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“Once again, Jeremy Rifkin has wrapped his brilliant mind around humanity’s greatest challenges and makes a compelling case for ending business as usual. The Green New Deal is a clear road map for the post-carbon transformation of the US economy and an inspiring vision of what could be the most promising economic opportunity of our lifetimes. It’s a must-read for investors, entrepreneurs and policy makers alike.” (Sir Richard Branson)

good ideas, but endless self-congratulation
After half an hour, it becomes too much: If I hear Rifkin repeat his "third industrieal revolution" one more time, I'm going to puke. The ideas are really good, if at times too theoretical (zero marginal cost do not exist, even if they decrease to negligible levels) and too techno-optimistic (at least in Europe, we'd love some privacy instead of all teh data about everything everywhere, thank you very much). BUT: JR can't stop telling you how many governments he's advised and how wttentively Angela Merkel was listening to him and how he single-handedly convinced large utility providers to change their strategy... Good lord, he IS important, isn't he. Seriously: The whole book could be condensed by 50% if the author wasn't so into self-flattery, it's painful to listen to.

Essential Reading for Climate Change Believers and Sceptics
Climate Change is here. This is the first book I have read that lays out a plan for what we as citizens and our government must do! It also details what China and Europe are already doing, and what the US must do. We are in an extinction event! We must act if our children and grandchildren are to survive and hopefully thrive. It is up to us to act now. Read this book and determine how you can participate and lead this movement!

The author appears to be delusional regarding China and it’s stated benevolence. He lives in theoretical world and fails to discuss negatives regarding wind and solar since they don’t bolster his weak argument. I’m not sure if the green new deal is more socialist or communist.

Education, not Entertainment
While the subject matter is important and the information is valuable, it is extremely tedious to listen to.
There is alot of repetition and technical jargon.
The narrator is clearly and well spoken, but after a while becomes a drone.
If you are using this work as a reference piece or an educational source, then I would regular breaks for note taking and consideration.
Otherwise valid points may be missed.
