Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility comes a stylish and alluring new story about art, money, and a precious family heirloom - brought magically to life by the beloved voice of six-time Emmy-winner John Lithgow.

Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by the Renaissance master Giuseppe Didomenico. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

Told with the quixotic energy of a classic Henry James tale and the gleeful absurdity of drawing-room comedy, this playful and effortlessly heartwarming story from one of America’s most gifted writers is a welcome reminder that sometimes what we find is more valuable than what we are looking for.

A pleasant way to spend an hour and 47 minutes, John Lithgow is an excellent narrator and the perfect choice to tell this tale about art, history and scheming plans

Pure fun

This was a joy to listen to. Uncle Percy as a character was larger than life, similar to the Count in A Gentleman in Moscow. I was beaming from ear to ear throughout the incredible narration done by John Lithgow. Art, character, excellent prose and delivered all in a short story.

Wonderful, but a wee bit too negative for me

It’s just his humor- denigrating everyone from cowboys to vegans. It is humorous at first but irritated me a bit by the end. Sarcasm as wit. But overall I really enjoyed it, especially because it was brief, and so recommend it.

I wish this were longer

But really, it’s just perfect as a short story. Happy but not sappy. Educational but not pedantic. I just loved it. And there is no better narrator than John Lithgow.

A Gentle, Refined Amusement

Two hours in the company of an aging man of New York; I felt as if I was hearing this tale over dinner in the company of an old, distant, very interesting friend. Marvelous!

Sorry but satifying

I love the descriptive detail, the well timed observations within the storyline and the narration. What a gem of a little story.
