Publisher's Summary

In "People in Hell Want Ice Water" - an eerie and suspenseful short story about connection, trust, and self-preservation - a random hookup amidst the COVID-19 pandemic brings two lonely people together when they need it most. Colin is an immunocompromised software engineer living alone in Los Angeles when he meets Martha on an early morning walk. She’s irreverent and mysterious, and although Colin knows better than to invite a stranger into his house, it’s been over 40 days since he’s been touched, and he can’t resist the temptation. This decision upends his quiet and regimented life: Martha cooks them elaborate meals and uncorks bottle after bottle of wine until they stumble to bed drunk every night. Within days she’s moved in. As their relationship evolves, doubts creep in. Colin and Martha realize just how little they know about one another, and the secrets they each keep begin to come to light.

Acclaimed author Edan Lepucki packs all the drama and intrigue of her breakout novels California and Woman No. 17 into this one-sitting listen.

Beyond weird

I'm having a hard time rating and reviewing this. The narration is great. Even the narrator's female voices are distinct and not as annoying as most performed by men. Great expression and emotion without over acting. The writing is the issue. It probably is well-written by most standard. However, the female characters are disgusting. Other than the Hispanic neighbor, they are vulgar, crude, and unsympathetic. I kept wondering why this decent but neurotic guy tolerated either of them. His best friend was unkind and didn't want to bother with him. The other woman is worse but I can't say more without spoilers. I kept hoping she'd have a deadly accident. So how does one rate a well performed audio book with the only likeable character allowing himself and his beloved dog to be repeatedly mistreated by women of questionable values?

The tale is properly creepy and it keeps you guessing. The author wants you to see and guess at who and what one of these women is, what she's capable of, and what is real or imagined. It does that to a degree. But the factors I mentioned in the first paragraph were such an incredible distraction that they overshadowed the plot. I was angry for the victim and I didn't like the ending. At least the author succeeded in making the man sympathetic, even if he was a user when something was freely offered. If a man had written this I'd believe he hates women and needs to get some held. Actually, the female writer does need therapy. It's that weird. I didn't like this story and I don't like the picture it paints of the stereotypical untrustworthy female. I'm giving more stars than it deserves due to the skill of the writer, not her taste nor her judgment. I was just left unsatisfied and offended.

Foul

Disgusting. I stopped listening after the I’ll have her suck on my hemorrhoid like it’s a second clit comment. Wish I could erase hearing this. It’s a shame because the reader does a good job. It’s the content I didn’t resonate with.

A perfect pandemic story

An everyday pandemic story that becomes an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Lots of sex and wine, suspicion and indulgence set in LA.

Thank you!

Loved it, cannot believe the negative reviews. I thought it was very timely, clever, neurotic, ironic and darkly funny. If you didn't get the ending, you weren't paying attention.

Time I Can’t Get Back

Don’t make mistake I did. Not worth the read. I’d be shocked if this author has much other book writing experience.

Builds up to Nothing

This was a thriller about a man, lonely from the pandemic, who lets his biological urges get the best of him. He meets a woman who he sleeps with and allows her to move in with him. She’s using him, but he doesn’t care. He’s more interested in the sex, which he doesn’t describe, seriously? Various unsettling situations arise and then it just stops. I suppose the author is trying to be trendy. Just tell the listener what happened. It just stops. I heard much better thrillers than this. Great narrator.

good book

I am a Gardener and I got new earbuds today . the title of this book compelled me to pick it up. I listened to it all day until it was finished.
I honestly did not read the information about the book first just dove right in.
the story takes place in a pandemic much like the COVID 19 that were are currently enduring.
it's about a guy, that lives alone and takes his dog for a walk.
what goes on after that is a good story.
not a thriller not a mystery just a really good story about a guy.
pick it up
