Story
In an age where pleasing people, puffing up your ego and building your résumé are seen as the methods to "make it", the Apostle Paul calls us to find true rest in blessed self forgetfulness. In this short and punchy book, best selling author Timothy Keller, shows that gospel humility means we can stop connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self condemnation. A truly gospel humble person is not a self-hating person or a self-loving person, but a self-forgetful person.

Story
Acclaimed writer and pastor Timothy Keller grapples with the age-old question: how do we deal with pain and suffering, both in our own lives and in the world around us? The problem of pain is a perennial one, and for those who undergo particular sufferings it can often be the largest obstacle for trusting in a good and loving God. If such a God exists, why is there so much suffering in the world? And how do we deal with it when it comes into our lives?

An amazing book!!
- By Anonymous User on 06-04-2022
Publisher's Summary
The universal symbol of the Christian faith is neither a crib nor a manger, but a gruesome cross. Yet many people are unclear about its meaning, and cannot understand why Christ had to die. In this magisterial and best-selling book, John Stott explains the significance of Christ's cross and answers the objections commonly brought against biblical teaching on the atonement.
John Stott's modern classic is as sharp and pertinent as ever it was. It combines an excellent biblical exposition and a characteristically thoughtful study of Christian belief with a searching call to the church to live under the cross.

Eye opener
in many cases I believe amongst us that there are things revealed to certain people, not most but some. In this case, I have listened to this book and can truely say of most people who have grasped the cost of Christ's cross, this man simply unravels the wonder. the last 5 mins of the text is simply put, goose bump inducing as the author simply ties it all up into something that resonates with me. After all is said and done, one can simply thank God for having such witnesses that are able to interpret his work through such profound knowledge.

Pithy implications of the cross of Christ
There's a lot to absorb from this book. I feel compelled to get the written version to highlight the many succinct points Stott makes. I'm sure I will listen to this audiobook more than once. It sometimes seems to follow rabbit trails, but always comes back to the cross. Stott treats a lot of heterodox theological issues in juxtaposition to orthodox ones, so it can be hard to follow if you can't listen straight through in one sitting.

Our God Suffered For Us
Not much I can add to the power not just of this book but of what this book is about.
There is an eloquence and a depth that John Stott brings to the supreme moment in human history that coalesces human suffering and divine intervention.
I finished the last chapter moments ago. And I am brought to tears by just the word picture of that final poem about the scars.
Do yourself a big favor and consume this book – either in audio form, or read it. I never plan to, but almost always by the end of a good book like this one I will find a way to get the paper copy. Just so I can read and reread what is on the pages.
As this book should, I am drawn to re-read the Gospel accounts of what happened on that day and that afternoon.
I loved listening to this book – the British voice is fitting, of course for its author.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Excellent book on the Cross of Christ!
A super informative and thorough book on the cross. He approaches the subject from many different angles and sets forth beautiful truths about God's heart and about the glory of what God has done for us in Christ. Truly the salvation that God has provided for us is totally awesome and amazing. Though this book is quite long I highly recommend it. The only point that I have a substantial disagreement with is where he says that physical healing was not provided in the atonement. I do believe that it was provided. but like I said this is the only major disagreement I have with this book. Other than that this is an awesome book.

Set Your Heart Aright
Stott guides heart and head alike to Christ’s suffering, so that we both acknowledge His authority and learn to love Him for His compassion. Each paragraph is an antidote to poor thinking, yet at the same time this is no mere intellectual exercise. Stott instead shows a path to Christ’s painful and effective surgery for our heart, learning to love the One that can alone remove our bitterness, our insecurity, our pitiable self-love. Simon Vance’s cadence gives a warm and thoughtful presentation of this most valuable of books.

Well Research But At Times Without Need
The final chapter on suffering and how God uses it in the elects life to increase our spiritual knowledge and understanding of Him, while spawning a humble posture before HIM was worth the price of the book. The Holy Spirit illuminated it greatly to me resulting in great affirmation of HIS plan and purposes. Now in Christ by grace through faith in Jesus Christ some 42 years. Praise You, LORD GOD!

The most profound theological book I have read
This book is worth getting even if you read only one chapter. After you have listened to the first 15 min of chapter 1 you will realise what a treat you are in for. I really appreciated the detailed background Stott provides when dealing with complex theological problems and extensive coverage of various perspectives before he wraps up with his own understanding and convictions based on extensive biblical references. My only regret is that I did not read this book when it was first published in the 1980s. I intent to read it again every 5 to 10 years to clear up muddled ideas and bad theology preaches so often today in an era when Jesus is presented as a divine personal assistant rather than the crucified Christ and risen Lord before every knee must bow.
