 Lucas Corso, middle-aged, tired, and cynical, is a book detective, a mercenary hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. When a well-known bibliophile is found hanged, leaving behind part of the of the original manuscript of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers, Corso is brought in to authenticate the fragment.

Soon the unsuspecting Corso is drawn into a swirling plot involving devil worship, occult practices, and swashbuckling derring-do among a cast of characters bearing a suspicious resemblance to those of Dumas' masterpiece.

Nostalgic thriller with class

Having enjoyed Johnnie Depp’s portrayal, when I found that the movie was based on this book I was eager to consume it.
The Club Dumas has not disappointed me. Rather, it has opened a door to other books to find. And so I become as lost in a chase as this tale encourages.
I immediately consumed this title again to savour the sweetness of its subtle plot and the mysterious world it constructed. The stories entwined basement upon great works teases a confidence that doesn’t deconstruct.
The portrayal in audio is a true delight. The passions and spite captured in the voice of the reader rewards the listener and transposes him into the world of The Club Dumas.

(Disclaimer: I found this book via The Ninth Gate movie, so went into it moderately spoiled)

The story is for the most part very good but suffers at moments when the author feels the need to try to pretend it's not a novel by having the characters talk about it as a novel, thus reminding you it is a novel.

Still well worth the time to enjoy.

I watched the Ninth Gate and I wanted to read (listen to) the book that inspired the film. Although the movie is very different from the book, I thought both were excellent. I did like the ending of the movie better as it is clear what becomes of Corso. I don't want to spoil the book ending but maybe I just like a more obvious ending.
