"قاع المدينة" نوفيلا عبقرية يغوص بها يوسف إدريس في مراتب الهرم الاجتماعي من أعلى قمته حيث منزل القاضي الشاب "الأستاذ عبدالله" إلى أدنى درجات الفقر في بيت الخادمة "شهرت" حيث تبدأ القصة بفقدان القاضي لساعته والتي ليس لها أي قيمة لكنَّ فكرة اختفاءها أو سرقتها كانت مثيرة للجدل لرجلٍ في مركزه وبعد تفكير عميق خلُص إلى أنَّ السارقة هي خادمته فداهمها هو وأحد أصدقائه في بيتها الذي لا يرقى إلى مسمى بيت لتنهار وتعترف بالسرقة..

وهنا تبدأ الحكاية التي تتشعَّب وتتداخل في المكان والزمان ومداخل النفس البشرية وغاياتها التي لا تنتهي...

ليبقى السؤال أبديًأ؛ من هو الجاني ومن الضحية؟! وهل هناك مقاييس نصنِّف بها البشر لنعرف أطباعهم ونتنبَّأ بأفعالهم؟....الجواب الأكيد هنا هو أنَّ هذه القصة الطويلة ستقلب معاييرك وموازينك!!
