About this listen

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.

I rarely give top marks, but since I've listened to this book about 10 times, I guess it leaves me with no choice. Absolutely love it. In many respects it's everything we love about classic fantasy fiction, but it's all very original at the same time. One thing I will say - the author/narrator speaks quite fast, which suits the character perfectly, but he's so much easier to follow if you reduce the playback speed to 95%. I love tavern scenes in fantasy and there are plenty of these along the way. Fantastic system of magic. Awesome perspective on Goblins and there asymmetric politics and lifestyle. There's a brilliant passage via ship across the ocean and so much more. Plus, some genuinely chilling moments from an author who normally writes horror. If you love the fantasy genre, you'll love this one, no doubt.

Amazing story, hilarious writing. Buehlman manages to capture quintessential Irish/British humour despite being American.

Special mention for the songs performed as actual songs in the audiobook, superb!

Best new fantasy 2021

I loved every second of this book. The story is both thrilling and amusing. The author does a fabulous narration. I'll listen to this again one day, it's the kind of experience that needs a repeat!

This book is incredible. If you're looking for highly original fantasy with excuisite prose, unique worldbuilding and laugh-out-loud dialogue, look no further. The protagonist is witty and worldly and the narrative leads us through a highly original world without overwhelming us with info-dumps. It's nice to be given credit as a reader that you're smart enough to read between the lines and work things out for yourself at times.

The narration is outstanding and adds greatly to the narrative, love the protagonist's accent.

This has immediately become one of my all-time favorite books. Do yourself a favour and grab it!

Absolutely brilliant

Between two Fires was my first Buehlman read, this is more of a fantasy setting and perhaps less serious in tone. I love Buehlmans gritty, dark humour and slightly brutal approach to humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed it. An awesome ride. Nice to have an author narrate too. Cheers Chris!

Gritty fantasy meets black comedy.

A good listen! Only downfall is it’s a bit hard to follow at times with all the different names, narrator’s accent and absurdity of the magic

Great but a bit confusing at times
