دور أحداث هذه في ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين بينما كان المجتمع المصري منقسم إلى طبقة بالغة الثراء وأخرى متوسطة الحال تعتمد على وظائف الحكومة وثالثة معدومة تماما يتحول إليها كل من فقد وظيفته أو عائله.

من هنا يبدأ نجيب بدايته حين ينقلب حال الأسرة المتوسط إلى الفقر والعدم بعد وفاة عائلها الأب، الموظف السابق بوزارة المعارف والذي تكابد زوجته المشقة والعناء لأجل إنهاء أوراق معاشه اللازم لحياتهم لكن البيروقراطية المصرية المعتادة كانت كابوسا أطبق على صدر الأسرة حتى كاد يخنقها..

ومن هنا نبدأ رحلةً غريبة مع كل فردٍ من أفراد هذه الأسرة؛ الأم، حسن، حسنين، فوزية، لكل منهم شخصية ولكل منهم تجربته التي تتدافع على استمراريتها ظروف وإشكاليات تغذيها طبيعة كل واحد منهم.

وبقلم عالم النفس الحاذق يحلل نجيب محفوظ شخصية كل واحد منهم بإطار المونولوج الداخلي الذي يكشف عن جزء كبير من التحولات التي تأخذ مجراها في ثنايا الأحداث.
