Publisher's Summary
Patrick, Meg and their family had built a happy, sustainable life in regional Victoria. But in late 2013, they found themselves craving an adventure: a road trip.
But theirs was a road trip with a difference. With Zephyr (10), Woody (1) and Zero, their Jack Russell, they set off on an epic 6,000km yearlong cycling journey along Australia’s east coast, from Daylesford to Cape York and back.
Their aim was to live as cheaply as possible - guerrilla camping, hunting, foraging and bartering their permaculture skills, and living on a diet of free food, bush tucker, and the occasional fresh road kill. They spent time in Aboriginal communities, joined an antifracking blockade, documented edible plants, and dodged speeding cars and trucks on the country’s most dangerous highways.
The Art of Free Travel is the remarkable story of a rule-breaking year of ethical living.

Intrepid eco family cycle the length of Australia
The thrills and spills of life on the road is a roller coaster ride of a story. I enjoyed this book even more than I expected to. I admire the quest to learn how to live more like the aborigines did, to acquire their knowledge of nature before it is lost. It is an easy to read well read book. I recommend it whether you are eco friendly or not; a cyclist or not, even the geography and recipes are a delight to follow.

Inspiring!
Any additional comments?
Even if you don't subscribe to the permaculture lifestyle of this family, this book will inspire you to make small changes to live more sustainably and be more in tune with the world. A great way to see part of this wonderful country.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
We loved listening to this inspiring, honest book by a family living their values. An exciting book if you are interested in alternative modes of travel and opening to new ways of thinking about what is necessary to live a rich life. We also liked that it was narrated by the authors.

a great day love modern ecological adventure.
while I do not totally agree with the almost vegan approach that these folks have to their lives, it was a great tale reminding me of how important it is to live outside. I find their story to be compelling and it makes me think about the way I live my very consumable life.
