Publisher's Summary

Cursed, mated, and in for the fight of their lives....

Warlock Nate Hawthorne just wants a cup of coffee. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Because instead of precious caffeine, all he gets is cursed by a pack of werewolves who want to use him for his magic. Now the only way to fix the damage is a mate bond to a grumpy and oh-so-sexy alpha in the rival pack, who happens to hate him. This is so not how he wanted to start his day.

Ian Armitage never intended to take Nate as his mate. The Hawthorne family can't be trusted. Ian knows that better than anyone. The fact that he's lusted after the way-too-gorgeous man for years? Totally irrelevant. Ian's just doing what is necessary to protect his pack. This whole mating arrangement has nothing to do with love and never will. That's his story and he's sticking to it.

Nate and Ian will have to work together if they have any hope of staving off the pack's enemies and averting disaster. That's assuming they can stop arguing (and keep their hands off each other) long enough to save the day....

Contains mature themes.

Loads of fun: enemies-to-lovers romance!

Nate Hawthorne isn’t the most powerful warlock on the block, having been kept untrained and used as a spare battery by his evil, thankfully now-dead, warlock father. Unfortunately, someone else has decided to tap Nate’s powers and their ineptitude sees Nate slowly dying unless he can mate with Ian Armitage, the crankiest alpha werewolf around - a guy who’s always hated Nate. Light-hearted with a few creepy, squeamish bits thrown in, I’m not sure this enemies-to-lovers / supernatural romance made a whole lot of sense but I didn’t care, it was fun and thoroughly entertaining! You know the grumpy / sunshine trope? Well, this was grumpy and grumpier with Nate and Ian both resenting the need to bond and not trusting each other an inch. Told from Nate’s POV, US voice artist Chris Chambers did a great job of channelling the the snark and humour - I always enjoy his voice and performances but he outdid himself here (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue). Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Great Story. Great Narrator.

I love the Mismatched Mates series by Eliot Grayson. I first listened to this audiobook when it came out, reviewed it on my blog, but neglected to review on Audible.
Chris Chambers is the perfect narrator for the eponymous alpha’s warlock, Nate Hawthorne, who is the sole narrator of the book. Also Armitage Pack enforcer, Ian Armitage. He gives them sarcastic edges, boy are they sarcastic, and softer moments. Yeah, this pair start the snarky journey the first two books dole out in spades, and Chamber’s sexy voice does the holy hell! sexy times so well, the humour too. So worth starting your gay romance, paranormal journey with book #1, The Alpha’s Warlock and just keep on going because this series is awesome.

Fluff and sex and gore.

Okay I loved this. It was a good balance of adorable romance and paranormal action. (Though using 'gore' as a descriptor for this is probably misplaced, their just seemed to be more than I was expecting with all the fluff) It's a good reprieve from dark and heavy romance without being cringe worthy fluff.
The MC was more superficial than I usually like but he knew it, he owned it, he was loved because of it, and he was able to self reflect and admit when he was wrong... all together that worked so well.
I don't know if this is a spin off from another series but I did feel like I was missing the back story or something with some of the supporting characters. I know the next books in the series about other characters but it shouldn't feel like something is missing in their story in book 1.
Loved the narrator. I've listened to a few books by him and have never been disappointed.

Good Listen

This was a nice paranormal listen. I enjoyed the narrator and the author did a good job. I love the snark but sometimes it was a bit much in this particular case. I say this because the story is just from one character's POV. We have to garner how the other character feels by his actions and responses. Other than that, I loved the story line. A little bit of gore, action and smexy. Great narration.
Worth a credit.

Wowsa

Another five-star banger!

Holy s***, two in a row already as we move through 2021.

Look, aside from a majorish plot hole (that may get solved in the next book?? idk), this book was soooooo f-ing good.

I loved Nate and Ian. AH!!!

As usual a misunderstanding that could've been solved as children, really, got these buttholes into their current predicament-and what a predicament it is. These two were sort-of-friends at one point as kids, but then everything turned to s*** and they grew into messy adults. </3

I'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope, which is kinda weird, because it's never been something I cared for in the past. Or at least, nothing that I actively sought. But now? I'm into it, I guess. And these two knuckleheads did not disappoint.

Nate is a warlock, or rather, would've been one had his jerk of a father allowed him to fully embrace his powers instead of siphoning them for himself. I'm not sure, but I think Nate is sexually assaulted at the beginning of the book. The author doesn't elaborate on the "failed bonding," but that's what it sounded like to me. So CW if that's something you need to know. He has a lot of self-esteem issues due to his past trauma, and watching him work through them is difficult at times.

Ian is an alpha werewolf. If you've ever read a book with an alpha werewolf you know what you're getting. But something happens at like the 80% mark of the book that changes everything, and Ian stops being such a huge prick to Nate. The misunderstanding I mentioned? Yeah, that gets brought up and both of these dudes are like WAIT YOU THOUGHT WHAT? THAT I WHAT?

This book deserves a listen and a re-listen because what comes off as Ian being a complete f-ing jerk will probably sting a little less now knowing why he does and says the things he does (and Nate really shouldn't have called Ian stupid all of those times or taunted him for being a big dumb werewolf, bc totes unfair).

Bah. I loved this book. It's short enough to read/listen to on the couch in a day, and it keeps you on your toes literally the whole time. I know because I was up until 3AM listening to the darn thing, then got up and finished the book after I made coffee.

I can't wait to listen to the next one. So many books, so little time!

Fast and Furry-ous

I finished this with a surprising amount of feels, considering how awkward and clunky it started off.
The new narrator’s cadence was odd and way too slow for the level of sass and sarcasm that comes from twink warlock Nate. But, at 1.5x, and by the second hour, the narration settled in and the pulpy, enemies to lovers, warlock to werewolf opposites attract, love story took ahold.

At 1.5x, this clocks in at under 5 hrs, making this a fast and furry-ous listen through two obtuse idiots, a magical lightning-quick mystery and a clichéd miscommunication schtick that wrung my heart like only the best tropey-rom-coms can. There are four naughty scenes beginning at just under the hour point and delivering heat without getting too crass (what’s with the phrase “knotting” though? Is that a thing? perhaps I’m still new to MM nooky). I would definitely be willing to move on in the series, but given the shorter length, will still wait for a sale.

For even better MM paranormal romance with better snark
and the fabulous narration of Greg Boudreaux, I recommend:

🔥 Not Dead Yet series, for vampire/ghost whisperer that begins as a MM paranormal cop procedural
and ends as something epic
🔥 Demon Magic duology for demon/warlock MM romance with Deadpool level hilarity
and an HEA that will put you through the wringer and make you beg for more

fun & light

The cover had me thinking this might be a bit serious, but it's definitely not. This is a straightforward fun romance, no heaviness or angst. I usually prefer angsty slow burns, but I loved this anyway because it's well-written & pulls you along for a quick, light bit of fun. Great happy escapism! The playfulness suits the fast-paced, shorter format. Consistently funny, too. The romance develops a little too quickly for my usual tastes, but it suits the story's easygoing style.

I would have liked a couple more chapters at the start with more interactions between the leads before it jumped off into action so that their romantic declarations, new friendships, and internal thoughts felt a bit more established/earned, but it was easy to suspend my disbelief on that part and keep listening because of the playful style of the story.

Narrator is great! No complaints.

Omg, I love it

The story is wonderful, the characters are wonderful, the emotion is wonderful, and the narrator is wonderful! I’ve been in such a book slump lately and nothing has been able to hold my attention until I started listening to this! It hooked my attention right away, and it didn’t let go.

Meh

I have a weak spot for paranormal romances, especially when the human and supernatural worlds seem to intersect in mundane ways. But this book left me pretty disappointed. There really isn't much in regards to world building or setting the stakes, you don't know who is who or why things are supposed to work the way they do. The characters are bland and you don't really get to know them anyway. Is it the worst book I have ever listened to? No, but it really doesn't do anything. I just wish Audible would let me return the title, guess I am just out $13.

Warlock talks too. much.

The author got carried away with the Warlocks "whitey " repartee ! Too much becomes annoying.

Surprised by how much I love this

I (very unfairly) didn't expect anything out of this book. Imagine my surprise and joy when I ended up having the absolute blast listening to this audiobook.

The narrator definitely has a good range on him and I there were several points where I thought there were multiple people narrating. My only gripe with this book is just how short it is. I feel like there was so much unexplored potential in Ian and Nate's story, so I was disappointed to find out that this is the only book in the series focused on them.

I liked it

It took me a little while to get used to the narration. It felt like in the beginning the narrator was trying to damp down the emotions in his voice. Maybe he wasn't relaxed but after a few chapters his narration got much better or maybe I got used to him. Either way, I started enjoying the book more.

I liked both Nate and Ian's characters. Nate was very snarky and sometimes a bit lofty but as you get to know him you realise why. However, most of his snark and snappiness was a shield to protect himself. Ian was gruff and sometimes over bearing but mostly he was gentle, intelligent and fiercely protective of those he loved.

Like most romantic novels some of the tension is due to lack of communication which finally gets resolved at the end. Personally I dislike books that rely on miscommunication to move the plot forward but in this case it wasn't the main reason so all was fine.

Buying the next volume

Took a few chapters to get into it, but interested and want to hear more. The majority of the story is between the main 2 characters, but this made me feel invested in their relationship.

Wonderful new series

Werewolves, warlocks, vampires and miscellaneous demons this book has it all. Its snarky and heartwarming with a good level of action but essentially its about two damaged people finding each other and allowing themselves to love/ be loved Would highly recommend

Magic and wolves. Perfectly joined

I really enjoyed this book from the very beginning.. The characters were relatable, and plenty of sass and humour, together with action.. Twists and turns leave you guessing what is going to happen next. I just hope there is lots more to come. Pub intended.
