Jacky was running. There was no thought in his head, only an intense drive to run. There was no sense he was getting anywhere, no plan, no destination, no future. All he had was a sense of what was behind, what he was running from. Jacky was running.

The natives of the colony are restless. The settlers are eager to have a nation of peace, and to bring the savages into line. Families are torn apart, reeducation is enforced. This rich land will provide for all.

This is not Australia as we know it. This is not the Australia of our history. This Terra Nullius is something new, but all too familiar.

This is an incredible debut from a striking new Australian-Aboriginal voice.

Good concept

Liked the idea, but I felt it missed in execution, especially being such a short book. Some good themes and likeable characters, but holes in the narrative that were distracting

I'm going to miss this book. I'm sad already.

This is a story all Australians should take the time to acknowledge. I appreciate your words, Claire Coleman. Thank you for putting this into the world.

I really, really enjoyed this book.

On so many levels it shouldn’t work. As science fiction, it’s adequate, although it’s not really trying to be science fiction. As allegory, it’s a bit heavy-handed, yet it doesn’t feel preachy. As history… well, that’s where it really shines. It helped me see how the invasion of Australia by the British was perceived by Aboriginal people and British settlers alike.

I can’t really add much without giving major spoilers. The first few chapters felt a little slow, but once the characters and storylines are set up, things start moving and head towards an unexpectedly moving finish.

I was really impressed by the narration as well. Top work.

Great plot, great characters and the narration is one of my favourites. An all round amazing boom and performance.

A must-read for EVERYONE

I went on not knowing anything much about this, and taking it all at face value, so the twist kinda floored me and sent me back to the beginning to listen again. A story both timeless and timely, it helps keep a light shining on events that many of us have bdrm privileged enough to not experience for ourselves.

Hard to complete this book

Not quite what I expected.

The book started well, (although the constant abrupt switching between the parallel stories was a bit confusing at the start), but then about half way through it turned weird (the futuristic science-fiction part).

If you decide to buy make sure you understand what you are getting. We are travelling in remote parts of Australia and I was after something to complement the trip, this book is not it …

I’am dropping it with 3+ hours to go. About to try my luck with “Lies Damned Lies” instead …

This books gives a new perspective on what it means to be an Australian. It is an eye opener for even the most tunnel visioned rigid minds

how after the story is revealed to be science fiction, Coleman infodumps on several occasions through the excerpts to start chapters. It really pulled me out of the story to be told history of the invasion in such massive blocks. I wanted to wonder at it and uncover what was going on myself through the story rather than just being told.

Absolutely Stunning

Claire G. Coleman is a new favourite author after listening to this book. As a white Australian this book took me on such a moving journey of the experiences of our First Nations people. This book is filled with so much horrifying truth that it took me until half way through to realise why I found it in the fantasy/sci-fi section. The characters were so vivid and real that a really felt everything they went through.

Absolutely 10 out of 10 stars, and I will be looking for more of Claire's books.
