راقصة المعبد" و"العوالم" قصتان يضمهما هذا الكتاب المعنون ب"راقصة المعبد" والذي هو ثمرة في تراث الأديب توفيق الحكيم، تدور هاتان القصتان حول طائفة معينة من أهل الفن "العوالم" والتي تتكون من فرقة تغني وراقصة واحدة أو عدد من الراقصات هذه الفئة التي احتلت قصصها العديد من الأعمال الأدبية في الستينات: إن القاسم المشترك لهاتان القصتان هو أن حوادثهما تجري وبالمصادفة في قطار، يحمل معه هذه الطائفة من أهل الفن لكن من بلدين مختلفين.

ففي البداية يكتب توفيق الحكيم قصة قصيرة لفرقة من شارع محمد علي تذهب لإحياء فرح بالأسكندرية. يروي أحاديثهم في عربة القطار و ردود أفعالهم مع الرجال الذين يحاولون بدأ الحديث معهم، ثم ينتقل للرواية الحقيقية راقصة المعبد و التي تحدث بفرنسا، كان السرد مماثلا لعربة القطار و الانتقال إلى باريس و الإعجاب المتبادل بين الشرقي و الراقصة المشهورة...

تتجلى عبقرية توفيق الحكيم في هذين الوصفين المتشابهين في الأحداث المتناقضين بين الطابع الفرنسي الراقي و الطابع الشرقي للراقصات المصرية حيث تكاد لا تصدق أن الروايتين كانا من الكاتب نفسه إلا لو كان عبقريا مثل توفيق الحكيم.
