About this listen

This intimate and unflinching memoir explores Wen's struggle to survive, and confronts the belief that people don't change. Through appalling abuse and neglect, Wen finds a way to a very different kind of life, embodying resilience, healing and transformation.

The story is woven through with the intriguing themes of Wen's life. With humility, understanding and beauty, she delves into the plight of a stammerer, the unbreakable bonds of twinship, and her body's need to dissociate.

Wen's evocative imagery transports the listener from the red dirt of Broome, to the streets of India and the mists of Scotland. She crosses the continents, often by bicycle, committing to radical political action and spiritual exploration. These pursuits help forge her growing character.

After settling in Scotland, she uncovers buried memories of a terrifying Queensland childhood shrouded in threats and lies, and of her father's links to a Brisbane paedophile gang.

'To the outside world, we were the picture-perfect family. No one would have believed me, even if I could have found the words.'

She doesn't recoil from facing the truth of her childhood or the unconscionable harm her parents perpetuated.

Wen tells how she found her way to her heart and her true gender self. In doing so, she celebrates the power of kindness. Stammering Against Truth is a powerful and empowering book that proves past traumas need not define our futures.

An amazing journey

Wen can paint a picture with her words as terrifyingly vivid as the subject matter they mean to portray. Challenging, Shocking and Innocent. A must for anybody doubting their journey through pain and surviving.

Excellently written

An excellently written story, at times reminiscent of poetic. Wen has a lot of experience in her well lived life and has so much wisdom for it. I especially admire the ways she has gone about attempting to gain some peace and her spiritual outlooks (in no way religious). Reading about the times she rode her bicycle through all those countries had me in awe, so adventurous and it showed she has far more courage than she may at times think she has! I can hear Wen as she talks about her estranged mother, no matter how badly a mother may treat you, they are still your mother and you always hope to receive some form of approval from them. The amount of understanding Wen shows when discussing her abusive, neglectful mother and the knowledge that she too was damaged by her childhood and as a result had been left with her own flaws and disorders that affected her inability to parent properly is so very insightful! The narrator also read the story very well. I can also imagine how torn Wen must feel in hoping other grown child victims of those corrupt police come forward, and yet understandably also hoping there is no one else still battling the long lasting side effects from such horrific child abuses done by the same perpetrators. Well done for finding your voice Wen. I and your other readers hear you!

An emotional journey

Wen has written this so well, in my opinion. Her story flowed - making it easy to listen , but also very difficult to come to terms with what she went through. I found it difficult to get to sleep for a couple of nights, but her insight as she grew and discovered herself developed hope and peace at the end of her story.
The narrator was perfect for this telling of Wen’s experiences.
I highly recommend reading or listening to this book
