Publisher's Summary

Few American novels written this century have endured in the heart and mind as has this one - Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic.

A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes - and the stuff of nightmare.

True Horror/Fantasy Classic

Haven grown up reading Stephen King’s books I can now see where he and other writers may have drawn their inspiration from.
A true classic, a coming of age story interwoven with a coming of old age story.
Well written and entertaining.
Many of the themes running through the story are just as relevant today.
The narrator was excellent managing to bring all the characters to life.

Great descriptions, boring story, well narrated

Bradbury loves describing things 3 different ways, which paints a great picture of what's happening in someone's head but ultimately means nothing is actually happening in the story. Narration was top-notch with the voices and mannerisms.

Story came through in the second half of part two

I really liked the range on voices the narrator had, at first the book felt like it was going to start off epic but then it felt like it waned for a good while. At some points I kinda felt like I wasn’t really sure what was going on because as much as I love ray bradbury’s literary prose, it can become a little superfluous and take me away from what’s actually going on.
But once the carnival side of the story was well and truly established I finally felt like I didn’t want to stop listening.
However, again the prose did slow things down at times and I found reduced the intensity of the scene.

Ray Bradbury is a genius

It almost reads like a video game, every problem the protagonists solve only leads to the next, greater problem. I cant praise this book enough. It's just one of those books that you pick up and cant put down.

Intense use of metaphor

The writer creates and imersive story. He encapsulates the feeling of creepy dread. I thought the concepts were fascinating.
However this is a slow paced book and the narrator had a very droaning voice so you will either love it and be transported right into the world or (as I did at times) be transported to sleep.
