Publisher's Summary

In the town of Gainesville, Cooper Fox has a special place in people’s hearts. Since the car accident that wiped his memories, Cooper has been...a little foggy. Cooper doesn’t know how to do much, but one thing he instinctively seems to know about is strength training, and with his help, Gainesville High’s football team has just won the Mid-States final. With Cooper the hero of the hour, the whole town is getting ready to celebrate in style.

When three strangers crash the party and decide to pick on the harmless-looking guy carrying a cooler full of sodas, they trigger something inside Cooper. Afterwards, the folks in Gainesville can never look at him in quite the same way. Is he really just a regular guy who suffered a brain injury in a car crash, or is he someone else? Or something else?

As Cooper tries to come to terms with baffling new memories, he’s about to be plunged into a terrifying world of secret experiments and covert assassins that will test his new-found abilities to the limit.

A rollicking good listen

Loved it. This was a perfect book to listen to during this very boring time. It's fast paced, but not rushed, it has satisfying action scenes that don't go on and on for too long. It's not a challenging listen, it's compelling and I could not put it down. Its a great stand alone, but I'm hoping for a sequel because I want more of Cooper Fox.

The narrator does a really good job and it well chosen for this book.

Awful

I’m not one to give up on a book but I was so close with this. Was this written for young adults? Teens? I have never rolled my eyes so many times at the obvious storyline. At having to endure the slow pace of the lead character discovering himself and then continue to be narrated to as if we were at his level. And the narrator’s voices were awful! Really? That was supposed to be an English accent?! I thought it was a very poor attempt at Australian. One of the worst books I’ve endured on Audible.

Sleeper Agent

Tedious.
Shallow cardboard characters make it hard to relate to any or care what happens to them.
Good concept, if written by a semi- decent author would be ok but lack of suspense due to poor character development.

Not your usual story

Gripping story with truly excellent character development. Very different indeed to other stories with a broadly similar narrative. Looking forward to, I hope, further volumes in this series. Great narrator as well, which to me makes so much difference.

A great story, very well narrated

I really enjoyed this story. Due in no small part to the skill of the narrator. He did an excellent job with the different characters. Super impressive.

Can’t-put-down action and intrigue

I’ve been a big fan of John Birmingham’s work for well over a decade- ever since I found a dog-eared copy of one of his paperbacks in a GI mini-library. Back then, I read a few pages and I was hooked. Fast forward some thirteen, fourteen years and maybe the media type has changed (Audible), but his writing has not. Sleeper Agent, his latest, was crafted to the same high standard as the rest of his catalog.

What can I say? The book’s start drew me in with a confrontation between the protagonist and some bad guys, and it escalated from there. The narrative tension kept ratcheting upwards as it should, and what seemed at first to be a conventional spy novel transformed into a near-future yarn with strong science fiction elements.

All of it was credible, there was very little suspension of belief necessary as the tale rolled forward. I enjoyed this book during a couple of long car rides and it helped out during household chores. It was great, and at no point did I have the desire to shut my iPad and walk away. Each chapter found me wanting more.

This. This is what good fiction does. Highly recommend for lovers of general action, spy craft, and science fiction.

Not quite sure where to place this one

John B has been consistently one of my favorite authors in the sci-fi/thriller category for some time now. Bittner has always been consistent and a solid performer. So why not a higher review. I am not sure where JB wanted to take this story. It contains some of the usual political posturing and rants that he likes to slip in, but he seems to temper those later in the story. What I took away was that he may need to swap out editors at this point. Maybe this is just me, but it seemed to need more consistency in tone. That all said, a moderately original story, well-performed, and thus recommended.

An excellent romp

John Birmingham strikes again with a novel take on the idea of a sleeper agent. Exciting and engaging from the very first.

Terrible

author treats reader as if reader is incompetent. Continually reminded reader of Cooper Foxe's mental capacity. Unnecessary.

A Surprisingly Great Listening Experience

To be honest, I really did not expect to enjoy this book very much. However, I found myself not only enjoying it, but trying to predict the next move by each of the characters. I am happy to say that I was often surprised. Too often an author will have a character make the same mistake, repeatedly, just to extend the story or to make the story flow in a desired direction. After they make the same mistake a couple of times I get frustrated with the characters and the author and start thinking that both are idiots. But I did not encounter that problem with this book.
The narrator did a great job of expressing the emotions of the characters and bringing me into the story with them.
I would recommend this book to friends and relatives.

Absolutely worth a credit.

This book accomplished something unusual; it told a new story.

Is it Tolstoy or Hemingway? No. Did I stay engaged, longing to know what in the world was happening next? Yep.

To the author AND the narrator; thanks for your work. I enjoyed the ride.

Too much unnecessary swearing to get to the story

I was forced to rate the story, but I have no idea how good (or bad) the story is because I didn’t even finish the first chapter.

I was looking forward to the story because of the reviews, but while I can tolerate some bad language, there was so much in just the first chapter I just couldn’t continue listening. It’s one thing for characters to swear but swearing and crude language from the narrator is utterly unnecessary. It’s also a sign of a poor or lazy author.

this book is brilliant

Read it once. And then read it through all over again. The narrator totally brings the character's to life. And I have listened to A LOT of audiobooks. Given up on quite a few books who have terrible narrators. And stories that have more holes in them than a colander. I just hope that Book 2 will be as gripping and interesting.Praying for you Mr John Birmingham.

As above. It started out almost childish, but it got better as it progressed. The end leads you too think there’s a sequel in the making.

Average at best

Obvious plot with one small twist. I couldnt tell if it was the story or narrator that was weaker but his 'Thick London Accent' was somewhere between Australian and Californian...abysmal and highly distracting. I will avoid this narrator.

More Simple Jack than Jason Bourne

Though this would be a mix of Bourne and a History of Violence (great film watch it if you’ve not!). But it’s just pants. I tried to persevere but I just found the main character irritating, his relation ship with Mary morally questionable, and well there’s just so many great books out there I’ve binned this one after putting five hours into it.
