Story
We all have inner demons. We fight them all the time. Some of us achieve inner peace by coming to terms with them. But how do you come to terms with inner demons that tear free and become outer demons? Eric has been a vampire for nearly a century, and his demons are more than metaphors. While they controlled him, he was the Demon King. Now he has to avoid the monsters in his own mind, as well as angry nobles, fanatical religions, assassins, magi, other vampires, criminal organizations, and more.

Story
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Story
It's not easy, being king. You can't always rule a kingdom and still do what needs to be done. Eric - or King Halar, also known as the Demon King - has more than enough problems without the crown. But quitting the job of king isn't easy, either - unless you want to be beheaded. Most people regard that as an unsatisfactory way to quit. Even vampire lords tend to be cautious about guillotines. A king who loses his head has a real problem...or none at all.

Story
Eric - or King Halar, or Vlad, or any number of aliases - doesn't want to be bothered. It's hard to pin down what he does want, if anything. He lives a quiet life, almost a solitary one, mourning in his own way for the loss of someone dear. His quiet solitude can't go on forever. Despite the empty places inside him, events and creatures move through the worlds and across the void between, forcing him into action, into fighting, into confronting things perhaps better left alone...even forcing him into being a King.

Faced with war and the end of the world, Eric - or Halar the First, King of Karvalen - must find a way to stop a godlike entity bent on his destruction. His quest will be no easy thing, not a straight line to his goal, but even he can't anticipate just how far it will lead him on this epic journey. He will have to go farther than he can imagine from everything he has ever cared about before he can even begin a new journey - a journey home. Can he save the world and the people he loves? And, in so doing, will he be able to save himself?

Publisher's Summary
"I've awakened in a stone box about the size of a large coffin.... I'm filthy, everything aches, and, by the various so-called gods, I smell awful. I've woken up in worse places. Hmm. What does that say about my life choices?" (Eric, amateur magician, part-time vampire, and accidental king)
It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's fastest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him but likes him anyway.

Terrible Ending
This book is 42 hours... FORTY TWO HOURS.
You'd think in all that time the author would be able to tell a complete story, but somehow he manages not to do that. About 25% of this book is just sitting in the MC's head listening to him think about how magic works, but that didn't drive me completely off. I'd have been okay with that IF.... IF.... IF this book had a conclusion.
Nope. Not here. Not this book.
Instead the story just stops when the bad guys are winning. No resolution. No sense that anything's really been accomplished. It's almost like a "Build a Village" LitRPG with no plot.
Awesome... I just spent an entire work week listening to a guy think about magic, how to put together spells, and build up his little kingdom, and all of that long contemplation is useless because it doesn't do anything useful by the end of the book. He and his magic doesn't even defeat the antagonist. He doesn't even wound the antagonist. What the f' is the point?
I will say that I do like Fred, but that's about all I look back on and find truly satisfying.

Enjoyable but annoying at times
This is definitely a long book and for the most part, it's quite enjoyable. I just wish that there were less parts where Eric was a whiney child. There are many times Eric constantly questions himself regardless of what those around him tell him and it can get on your nerves quickly. There were times I just wanted the story to progress.
Also, I'm concerned if every book in this series is going to be defined by a tragedy, because The first book had people dying and this book does the same, along with the ending, which I didn't really like.
I also hope less people die since one time is impactful, two times is surprising and three or more times is just plain annoying. It's hard to like characters when all you can think is "when will this loved one die". Main reason I don't like GOT. But I got sidetracked, I'm going to continue with the series because I feel too invested now but I hope it becomes lighter and that some actual growth as a person is seen from Eric. I much prefer the comical banter between him and Firebrand and Bronze.

Deep, Rich, Amusing.
Beautifully done. A vampire story without being a typical YA vampire story. The story has humor, depth, and is surprisingly captivating for being so very, very long. The narrator has a pleasing and varied voice. He does a really good job of separating the various characters and keeping their voices straight. Buy this audio book on its own or with the previous in the series. Either way, you are in for a treat and I envy you your first listen.

Worst conclusion to a book I have ever read!
Don’t waste your time reading this book. I enjoyed the first immensely and was on board with this book until the lazy, uninspired, and frankly bull**** ending. I feel as though the author decided to punish any reader who made it through 98% of the book.

I do not normally write reviews, but I had to for this book. The first book in this series was spectacular but this book eclipses the first by far. Gritty, dark fantasy, wonderful world building, exceptional characters, humor and death. This book has it all. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

OH NO!!! I have to wait for book 3. :(
I loved listening to this novel! The story grabbed my attention immediately and it held it through to the end. I love the magic system, it makes sense to me, and I love how the protagonist works through the problems he encounters by using magic and his vampire powers. This is a truly unique vampire story and it's truly epic. There is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end, which leaves me chomping at the bit wanting to know what happens in Book 3. I hope it's not a long wait. I think the narrator is a perfect match too. I can't imagine any one else narrating it. Sean Runnette was excellant!

Continuity issues, lots of padding, still jaunty
I really struggled with continuity issues in this book. It still has the same jaunty tone of the first book, but I was so irritated by the continuity issues, that I was distracted for at least the first half of the book -hence the low 3 star rating.
Eric wakes after 80ish years, tho' for him it feels like yesterday that he had the big battle ....but instead of rushing off to find out how the love of his life and children are, he decides to train some new knights and invent things? And we're almost 3 hours into listening before he starts to ask how his family is /decides to visit etc? Come on.... Eric might be a vampire, but the whole plotline centres around him being a good bloke, despite being a dastardly fiend of the night. His complete disregard for those people who meant so much to him before he "fell asleep" feels completely wrong. He also never bothers to find out about his friends' descendants and whether they're all doing ok.
Also, he is suddenly able to do magic at night again? No explanation for it. Not even a "gee wow, I can do magic again" reference. This was a serious continuity issue for me. Either Garon Whited simply forgot about this plot inconvenience, or his editor made a hash of things.
Did I miss something? Did I zone out and miss these explanations?? I like my stories to stack , and these issues undermined everything for me. And that's aside from any morality issues with Tort who was his ward just "yesterday".
Once I eventually managed to put the above irritants aside, I still enjoyed it. Yes, there is loads of padding in the story, and there were plenty of times when I would zone out,(perhaps I simply missed the "magic again" explanation?) but Sean Runnette's reading is easy on the ear, the story retains its light tone and it's a pleasant enough escapist listen.
The ending is sudden, and crafted to get the listener to need book #3. I probably will download book 3, but I need something pacier first, and if book 3 ends as suddenly as book 1 and 2, it may well be my last of the series.
Other reviewers haven't commented on the issues that have irritated me, so if you enjoyed the first book, and are not as pedantic as I clearly am, then you will probably enjoy this one too. (the ending is a cliff-hanger, but it won't bother you if you're happy to download #3)

Best fun to be had in book form
Garon Whited's Nightlord series is one of my favourite audio books to date. The writing is funny, witty, entertaining, dramatic and takes you on a truly extraordinary journey. Paired with Sean Runnette as the narrator it is a delight to listen to. Sean's voice adds drama and depth to an already dramatic tale and really brings the character of Eric to vibrant, blood sucking life. I was hooked from the very first paragraph and my only complaint is that I have to stop listening when the book ends. I will be eagerly, impatiently and excitedly awaiting the third book with bitten nails and a fervent hope for Eric's survival.

Aw no! You can't leave me like this!!!!!
Where does Nightlord rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One off or the best I have listened too.
What other book might you compare Nightlord to, and why?
It stands alone, I can't compare it in kind.
What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The spirit of the story, his inflection, and each character is real!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It certainly was!!
Any additional comments?
Another please!

The technical aspects to magic
So... I might have listened to shadows before sunset and well, I wish that the story would just go on forever. I loved the characters, the plot, the details and even the confusingly brief nods to things that later led me to google the series to find out if there was a prequel.
The thing I love more than anything though, was the beautiful way in which you meld science and magic. The idea of a wizard dissembling a spell as if it were code in order to hack together some quick and dirty solution, only to later refine with the help of more technical mages is simply brilliant. I love your book and I'm about to go through Sunset now.
I do hope that when the next instalment is ready, that you get it to the ever talented Sean Runette post haste, for his performance was simply stunning.

Good Book
Would you listen to Nightlord again? Why?
Yes, it is very entertaining, the performance and book manage to provide a personal experience of an American becoming a vampire in an alternate reality.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Nightlord?
I think the humour, which is often self deprecating.
What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Form me the American accent which works very well with the pop culture references that so often lead to reflective humour.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
An American in Mordor

Just getting better....and better.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Its a great story, and Garon Whited has created a wonderful blend of worlds and characters with real depth.
What did you like best about this story?
It blends so many genres and does it very well indeed. As I've said the characters have real depth and you relate to each of them throughout the story. The "hero" is very believable and fallible too!
Have you listened to any of Sean Runnette’s other performances? How does this one compare?
As usual Sean Runnette is masterful in his performance. He does not "read a book"....he tells it like it's his story from his own memories.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not a chance at over 30 hours!
Any additional comments?
GARON what a place to leave me hanging! Get writing this minute.....!!!!!
