Story
It's not easy, being king. You can't always rule a kingdom and still do what needs to be done. Eric - or King Halar, also known as the Demon King - has more than enough problems without the crown. But quitting the job of king isn't easy, either - unless you want to be beheaded. Most people regard that as an unsatisfactory way to quit. Even vampire lords tend to be cautious about guillotines. A king who loses his head has a real problem...or none at all.

Story
It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home.

Story
Eric - or King Halar, or Vlad, or any number of aliases - doesn't want to be bothered. It's hard to pin down what he does want, if anything. He lives a quiet life, almost a solitary one, mourning in his own way for the loss of someone dear. His quiet solitude can't go on forever. Despite the empty places inside him, events and creatures move through the worlds and across the void between, forcing him into action, into fighting, into confronting things perhaps better left alone...even forcing him into being a King.

Story
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Faced with war and the end of the world, Eric - or Halar the First, King of Karvalen - must find a way to stop a godlike entity bent on his destruction. He will have to go farther than he can imagine from everything he has ever cared about before he can even begin a new journey - a journey home. Can he save the world and the people he loves? In the first book, Hadjar lost it all. His body ruined, parents dead, and his title of Prince replaced by a slave collar. It seemed like Primus had deprived him of everything. But no one can take away a man's will to fight. Even if his heart turns into a bleeding stone due to endless grief and suffering, it won't matter. The most important thing was that he still had the will to go on. The thought of taking revenge on his family's murderers gave him the strength to survive. After receiving a piece of the mighty Dragon's heart, he regained his strength and enlisted in the army, where he made real friends and fought by their side in many battles.

He dreamed of adventure and freedom, but those dreams were taken away from him. The same way his mother, father, and sister had been taken away. They took the kingdom, they took his own destiny. Unfortunately, Cal has only put together the most bare-bones of systems. The Beginning After the End: Publisher's Pack 2 contains books 3 and 4 of The Beginning After the End series, Beckoning Fates and Horizon's Edge. Though Arthur Leywin would like nothing more than to pursue his studies at the esteemed Xyrus Academy, where he hopes to push his already potent magical abilities to new plateaus and perhaps discover something more about his reincarnation into this world, he finds the politics of the school’s halls even more challenging to navigate than those of the council chambers he once inhabited as King Grey.

About the ending (no spoilers)
- By Daniel A on 08-05-2020
Publisher's Summary
We all have inner demons. We fight them all the time. Some of us achieve inner peace by coming to terms with them. But how do you come to terms with inner demons that tear free and become outer demons?
Eric has been a vampire for nearly a century, and his demons are more than metaphors. While they controlled him, he was the Demon King. Now he has to avoid the monsters in his own mind, as well as angry nobles, fanatical religions, assassins, magi, other vampires, criminal organizations, and the neighborhood gossip.
He wants two things: To find Tort, and to have someplace to call home.
It may be too much to ask.

main character turned into a self centered girl
series started off with regular geek fumbling his way into the world of vampires. ..did a good job with bad guys using wit and unexpected powers of the dark. By book three , he's an egomaniac that wants everybody to love him and fear him but his big decisions are what "outfits" to wear, and also wants us to know the minute details of his imaginary magic..just like his side kick...give us the cliff notes version...hope erik gets bounced back to school and we can see the interesting story of how the blond chick takes over the world

Enough "Niceguy™"
First: The good. I did listen to all three books so far, and apparently enjoyed them enough to continue listening. Also, the narrator really does a great job of keeping the story alive, i felt very engaged with the listening, even while being frustrated at the titular character. I think Bronze is a terrific horse idea, even though we gloss over how he killed several real horses to make her. Some of the action scenes are well done and
Complaints: First, it reads like a wish-fulfillment novel (i.e., the author just sorta mixes up a bag of things he wishes he could do and pulls out the base plot - ergo, i'm an immortal-vampire-wizard-deathgod-scientist who is still alive during the day, because why not sex?)
Second: He's an idiot. Eric, Halar, Vlad, whichever name he goes by, he makes me actively anxious in how unaware he is. In this third book, he escapes his "basement" and tries to make up for his lost time. This includes being a Niceguy™ up until someone disagrees with him, has a different outlook on life, or basically chooses any path but the one the Nightlord agrees with. Then, he decides he better make-up for his "evil-alter-egos" actions, and goes about righting some wrongs. But he never considers that maybe some women don't want to see their rapists face, or some children will never forgive the man they saw pour molten lead down their father's throats. Nope, if he just tries hard enough, everyone will forgive him, and let him go ahead doing whatever he wants, AS LONG as it isn't being king, because he really doesn't like kinging. He just wants to tell everyone what to do, and be left alone
And he's so bad at relationships, he can't handle all the sex that gets thrown at him, it confuses his already overtaxed relationship sense, and he has to go back to his pseudo-scientific experiments based in loose ideas and glued together with magic.
Ok, enough complaining, the story is good enough that i didn't quit half-way, so that's something!

Recycled plot from the first two books.
Would you try another book from Garon Whited and/or Sean Runnette?
No.
Has Orb turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Any additional comments?
This is exactly the same plot as the other two. Same bone headed decisions by the main character. Same new romance. Same attempt to improve a world. It all goes wrong and Eric ends up dead/sleeping/lost/whothehellcares again.
Won't be fooled by this series again.

I Loved the First 2! The 3rd Was a Waste of Time!
Would you try another book from Garon Whited and/or Sean Runnette?
I wouldn't buy another book by this author without reading the reviews of those who have read it already. I wouldn't start another trilogy by him without all 3 books having been released and knowing that I would enjoy all 3! There is nothing worse than loving the first 2 and then being let down with the 3rd book -- really let down -- as happened this time!
Would you ever listen to anything by Garon Whited again?
Yes, but with the hesitation that I just explained above.
Did Sean Runnette do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The narrator was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Orb?
I would revise the 3rd book taking out much of it and adding a satisfying ending.

Save yourself some time....
Just listen to the first couple of hours and the last couple of hours. The rest is rambling fluff that goes absolutely NOWHERE. Generally if I buy a long book I expect it to go somewhere, resolve something. Better yet, save yourself the money and don't buy this book at all.
I loved book 1, could live with book 2, but now I won't get book 4...

Good, but too much going on. ending ruined it.
I really like the character and the world, but there is simply too much going on. its not enough for the hero to have 1,2, or even 3 quest. he has to have so many that most major plots go unresolved, despite being the focus of the book. The ending is a cheap cliff hanger. The author set up a great conflict and drama about dealing with consequences of his alter egos actions, facing the people he cared about and hurt deeply, deciding how to move forward and a plot against him and his crown from a traitor. then the author changed his mind in the last 3 chapters to revisit a minor subplot that escalated in an unbelievable and uninteresting way. It feels like the author simply lost interest at the end. i will finish the series only because i am this far in.

I am tired of these endings
I am tired of these endings, every time it is the same thing a massive cliffhanger and it's annoying 40 hours just for a ridiculous cliffhanger every time this is a tiring and annoying formula and I'm t worn out from listening to these books because of it. I enjoy most of the book but the last hours of the first three are the same thing every time the same thing you know it's coming I guarantee you every book after this has the same cliffhanger at the end of it. I'm done with this series

So disappointed
I liked the first and second book (til the end) and had hoped the third could make up for the lack luster ending. This book was so hard to read at times, the author never ties up ANY loose ends and just left me feeling like I waisted my time on the whole series. The narrator put forth a good performance but I think he was limited to the material.

Superb!
as the others, this was amazing! where Garon Whited gets his ideas I have no clue but I hope they keep coming. Sean Runnette's got a grrat voice and he's a great narrator. One of my all time favourite reads/listens.

Not as good as first two books
Good story but gets bogged down in so much repetative superfluous technical detail. This slows the listen to the point of needing to fast forward sections to get away from being bored.

I can not stop listening
Third in the series so far and still just as enthralling. I barely take a breath of air before I sink back into the next one. As a matter of fact, I will be starting knightfall the second I have finished this review. This exciting tail of part, science part fantasy, part crazy is everything I look for in a book and more.

3 books in and still going
Found it dragged on in some chapters. What needed to be said could have been done in less words... Not sure if I'm still gripped enough to buy book 4....
