Ein mysteriöser Mord an einem unbescholtenen Landarzt ruft Sherlock Holmes auf den Plan. Der Mann wurde erschossen, in seiner Hand fand man ein schwarzes Band aus Seide. Die Spuren führen zu dem ländlichen Anwesen der Familie Conway. Dort stößt der große Detektiv zunächst auf eine Mauer aus Schweigen. Sherlock Holmes und Doktor Watson forschen in der Familiengeschichte und stoßen dabei auf eine große Überraschung. Nur wenig später wird eine weitere Leiche gefunden. Scheinbar ein Selbstmord. Doch Sherlock Holmes vermutet etwas Schlimmeres und sticht damit in ein Wespennest. Holmes wird mit Ereignissen konfrontiert, die er nicht vorhergesehen hat.
