Publisher's Summary

Rufus Rides a Catfish (And Other Fables From the Farmstead) is a collection of whimsical fables based on "true" bedtime stories told to the author by his father in the mid-1970s. Growing up on a farm in rural South Dakota served as inspiration for these tales. The main character is a cat named Rufus who is the self-appointed protector of the farmstead and all its inhabitants, including several talking animals.

Another main character is a sincere but dopey dog named Lulu, whose exuberance for life is contagious. Naturally, Rufus finds Lulu's enthusiasm tiring but, as the protector of the farmstead, his code of ethics drives him to be tolerant ... to a point.

Each story (this book is a collection of ten) playfully hints at a life lesson and, like all fables, offers a moral at the end.

Each fable is also published independently, in a series of ten. Every individual book includes a vocabulary quiz and teacher/student discussion points. A separate teacher's guide, designed to accompany the series, is available under its own title.
