إنّها طريق البحث عن السعادة والسلام والطمأنينة والرفاهية، يسلكها (صابر) مبتدئًا بالاسكندرية التي لم تسعفه طرقها في العثور على مبتغاة فيقرر البحث في القاهرة. وهناك يدأب بحثا واستقصاء بلا طائل فتقترب نقوده القليلة من النفاذ وهو يقيم في فندق شعبي يتعرف فيه على (كريمة) التي تشكل امتدادا لأمه (بسيمة) التي دفنها المشيعون بعد خروجها من السجن فتقرر البوح له بسرّ أبيه فيفاجأ بأنه حيّ وأنه – كما أخبرته – من الأعيان الذي سيوفر له استمرار حياة اللهو وعدم الإنتاج والتبطل...

تسوقه الظروف بينما هو ينشر إعلانا بحثا عن أبيه (سيد سيد الرحيمي) للتعرف على (إلهام) الفتاة العصامية الواعية التي تفهم الحياة بتعقديداتها وتعمل على بناء مستقبل منشود لها فيتحابان بعدما يخبرها كاذبا بقصة اختلقها يبرر فيها وجوده وبحثه وحبه، لتتصاعد الأحداث وتتشابك.

تعتبر هذه الرواية من أروع ما كتب نجيب محفوظ عن الرغبة و الطمع الكفيلان لأن يكونا أسباباً قوية للقتل. تمثل رواية الطريق نقداً قاسياً للواقع المرير التي شهدته مصر بعد الثورة و تفشي الفساد بين الأوساط الاجتماعية المختلفة للشعب المصري بأسلوب روائي شيق.
