About this listen

From the moment she’s struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours, and the heartbreak of forbidden love.

Luckily Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly, intelligent Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who is also fossil-obsessed. Despite their differences in age and background, Mary and Elizabeth discover that, in struggling for recognition, friendship is their strongest weapon.

This is seamlessly written and delightfully told. The narrator is perfect and makes a distinction between two character voices. I’m very pleased I took up my friends recommendation to buy it. Its history opened up all its colour and sounds and emotions. The women whose passion for fossils is unmatched have particular difficulties getting their work taken seriously by those who should know better. The questions they raise, the navigation of a prehistoric past poses to religion is all part of this tale. I couldn’t stop listening to it and felt very happy and satisfied but also a bit sad to see them go back into history.

Friendship and passionate endeavour

I was transported by this book. I found it wonderfully evocative, poignant and a wonderfully told story. While I know it is only based in fact, there is enough real history there to make it compelling and left me ready to research the real Mary Anning. I didn’t want the book to end.

A remarkable book, very well written and beautifully narrated

Brings alive the characters and the place. Fascinating to imagine living in a time of such scientific discovery and revelation.
Beautifully read and a delight to listen to.

Hattie has brought Tracy’s novel to life. I listened to Curious Creatures during long work commutes , the story and narration transported my commute into something I looked forward to.

Thank you for Curious Creatures.

Completely unexpected

I loved this story. It has really renewed an interest in fossils for me. Now, when I see fossils I will be thinking of those who found them. Tracy Chevalier is a master of historical fiction and this story didn't disappoint.

Beautiful story.

Always a fan of the intricacy of female friendships, and Remarkable Creatures is exactly that. However, Hattie Morahan's soothing and yet simultaneously delightful voice is what brings this story to life. It was almost as if I were listening to a friend tell me a story from the passenger seat.

I love this author's writing style. this particular book has detailed descriptions of reptiles. I wish that was hilighted somewhere, I have a fear of reptiles, I could not go beyond Chapter 2. I so wish I could. but no.t for me. This review is a disclaimer.

Herpetophobia Alert!!
