كتب يوسف إدريس في مقدمته لهذا الكتاب: "اخترت هذا العنوان عن عمد، لا لأنها انطباعات مستفزة، ولكن لأنني حين كتبتها، كنت أريد أن أفرغ نفسي من استفزازاتها، لا أفرغها في عقل القارئ ووجدانه، وإنما لأفرغها على الورق" ويضيف إدريس: "إن الإنسان نفسه ليس سوى ظاهرة خُلقت لتستفز كل ما في الكون من مادة وجماد وحيوان وحتى الإنسان، وبقدرات الخلق الاستفزازية إلى ما يشبه الحياة أو الحياة الأسمى"
