Publisher's Summary

Nicholas Herman (c. 1605-1691) was born in Lorraine, France and served as a cook and shoe repairer at a Carmelite monastery. He was only a lay member of the order, and walked with a limp from injuries incurred as a soldier, yet his private thoughts provide a wellspring of devotional insight and refreshment.

Alternate Title: How to Pray Continuously

This is not a story and does not focus on Brother Lawerence's life. It gives numerous excellent examples on how to conscientiously include God in every aspect of your life no matter what you are doing. If that is your goal then this is a book I would recommend.
At times it is rather dry but what would you expect from notes and letters from a 16th(?) century lay brother living at a monastery? However, it is only about an hour long.
There are other readers of this title and I listened to all the available excerpts and found this read to be the best of the group. He sounds more conversational and has a pleasant voice. He speaks clearly without sounding institutional.

One of my top five favourite books of ALL TIME

If you could sum up Practice of the Presence of God in three words, what would they be?

Intimate Adoring Conversation

What did you like best about this story?

That it is 400 years old and translated into the exquisite language of 19th century English. That it is the way to learn to live the first and most important reason you are here: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

Which scene was your favorite?

Brother Lawrence in a letter writes, ``you may think this is all I talk about, It is true.`` I love that line, It is true. The narrators voice brings the heart of BL to life! Bravo Scott Brick! I can see, feel and aspire to his pure heart of integrity, to `think nothing, say nothing and do nothing but for the love of God. Imagine a man like that, a women like that! I love how BL uses feminine pronouns to describe his soul.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It makes me fall on my knees. It makes me change the way I think, speak, reflect.

Any additional comments?

He ``suffered much`` the first ten years practicing the presence of God. It`s not like flipping a switch it is a consistent forming of the mind and spirit. If it would take me ten years to pursue the heart of God, and find it the way Brother Lawrence found it, then I will start my quest now.

Bottom Line Transforming Truth Resource

I was introduced to this book early in my walk with Jesus. It helped to transform how I viewed and practiced praying. One of my favorite things about this book was the humility of Brother Lawrence. He didn't want this book published while he was alive. It seems he wanted neither the credit or the glory that belongs solely to GOD.

Brother Lawrence is amazing, Scott Brick isn't

Any additional comments?

I have read through my paper copy of this incredible little book many times. Unfortunately, Scott Brick is totally the wrong reader for this title. It requires a humble, gentle presentation, and these are not Brick's qualities (at least not when he reads). My advice is to buy the book and read it yourself.

Listen and read from time to time

Excellent book.

Something all Christians should read and listen to more than once.

I plan to read and listen to it a few more
times and then revisit it every few months

wow.

do much trust in YHVH here. so many truths. I hope many of you glean as much from this book as possible. the reader makes this book something i can work, and even sleep too. it has som seriously LIFE CHANGING principles in this book, but they take dedication for fruit to become visible. let us all persist in relationship with YHVH just as Brother Lawrence does even now in Eternity.

Exceptional

I have experienced the presence of God through practicing mindfulness yet the tranquility and the perception shift mindfulness brings has been difficult to maintain in daily life when thought and activities demand attention. This has renewed my tranquility and I am making it a daily practice to listen at least once daily, more if available such as while commuting. I love that it is in the format of a monk's letters sharing practical how-to advice to someone asking him how he keeps his mind on God in the midst of worldly demands. This is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you to Audibles, the translator and narrator for providing this! I recommend it for anyone, no matter what faith, the presence of God is universal, just found underneath all the noise of the mind.
