Publisher's Summary

Freaked out by her fortieth birthday, the creator and executive producer of Never Have I Ever reflects on the importance of good friends--and the mortifying obligations it takes to keep them.

Yes, Mindy Kaling is the genial Hollywood celebrity who posted twelve selfies from a single Oscar party, but that smile took work. In this hilariously honest essay, Mindy reflects on the social anxiety that she traces back to the slices of white cheese her parents served at her ninth birthday party. Little has changed in thirty years--least of all the fear of being judged forever. It’s probably best to just back away.

From the acclaimed writer, actor, director, producer, and New York Times bestselling author comes Nothing Like I Imagined. In these essays, Mindy Kaling shares the latest chapters of a multitasking life in Hollywood. Read or listen to them in a single sitting. Either way, they’re pitch-perfect.

down to earth and relatable

loved it. while I can't relate to the Hollywood experience, nor do I want to, Mindy Kaling could be one of my best friends if she is truly as she presents herself.

Fun but not as successful as the 1st of the series

Fun but not as successful as the 1st of the series... somewhere about 3/4 of the way in the humor and the poignancy fell off for me. I wonder if that's because I'm the next generation older or if my daughter would have the same reaction. - It is great these series of essays are free to read and listen to for Amazon Prime members.

relatable

i really enjoyed listening to this book. i’m a very outgoing person but i do not enjoy the company of people i have not met before. i love the company of familiar people. i would not say i have social anxiety, but i relate so much with mindy’s stories, and the conclusions of preferring to be lonely than to be bored, and preferring to be lonely than to be with surface level fake friends with whom no true intimacy or vulnerability is shared (that stuff exhausts me). i really appreciated this story (and enjoyed it much more than the first one in the series).

Relatable

This was very short. More relatable than funny, but I enjoyed it. I think I'll listen to a few of the other short pieces in this collection.
