Story
How does a feminist raise a son in a world that conditions boys into entitlement, privilege and power at the expense not just of girls' humanity but also their own? All boys start innocent, but by the time they are adolescents many of them will subscribe to a view of masculinity that is openly contemptuous of women and girls. This explosive new work will look at toxic masculinity and the closed ranks of brotherhood that shape an entitled, disrespectful and potentially dangerous idea of manhood.

The menstrual cycle is a vital and vitalizing system in the female body, and yet our understanding of and respect for this process is both limited and distorted. Publisher's Summary
Period Power is a profound but practical blueprint for aligning daily life with the menstrual cycle, to give all menstruators a no-nonsense explanation of what the hell happens to us every month and how we can use each phase to its full advantage.
Ninety per cent of people who have periods experience symptoms of PMS, a syndrome which features a wide range of signs and symptoms, and yet there's an enduring lack of understanding about what it actually is and a disappointingly meagre range of treatment options.
So many of us have a Jekyll and Hyde experience of our lives; we feel on top of the world, capable, confident and sexy for part of each month, then find ourselves in a state of physical and emotional discomfort and fatigue, wanting nothing more than to collapse on the sofa in front of Netflix.
But what if instead of just trying to plan for our dark days, we were equipped with ways to improve them? What if our desire to improve ourselves could be combined with our need to know just what our womb and ovaries are getting up to every month?
Not to mention how to take advantage of the natural superpowers that sit in each phase of our cycle so that we can plan our month to perform at our best.
Maisie Hill is uniquely placed, as an acupuncturist, women's health practitioner and doula, to explain just how we can achieve this as well as focusing on particular milestones that require an altered approach, such as coming off hormonal birth control, infertility, pregnancy, motherhood and the perimenopausal years.
Using what Hill calls 'The Cycle Strategy' - a secret weapon when it comes to improving our relationships, career and health - Hill will give us all the information we need to make sense of our cycles as well as accessible and practical suggestions through which we can improve our physical symptoms and stop berating ourselves because of the way we evolve through each menstrual month.

I found this book very enlightening. It has definitely helped put into perspective why I feel anxious or tired at different times in my cycle and why I have good times. While I don't agree with everything said in the book as some is unproven (e.g. seed cycling), for the most part it has been well worth the listen.

This book is LIFE-CHANGING
Knowing EVERYTHING about your cycle is powerful. Tuning in to
your daily, weekly and monthly cues frees you up to focus on the other parts of your life in a healthy, balanced way. Maisie Hill explains all you would ever want to know in an accessible
and interesting manner. There are even dedicated chapters for your first period and menopause
- which will be a tremendous help for my daughter, and for me later in life. I can’t imagine how
puberty would have been different if I had this book. Now I have such a greater understanding
of my body and feel in control. Read this book and harness the power of your cycle.
One last thing: I really valued how the author carefully chose her language/pronouns and
acknowledged that not all menstruators are women and not all women menstruate. She also
included a very powerful section on period poverty and ways to help while accounting for the
bias her own privilege brings to the conversation. It was inspiring and a good example of how to
go about affecting social justice.
And a last, last thing: I got the audio version too which Maisie Hill reads herself, and it is
fantastic.

All Over the Place
This book was a real struggle to finish. I enjoyed the first section about the cycle strategy, especially listening while on my period. I found it comforting, albeit at times unrealistic on how much control people have to plan their schedules around their period (if every woman did this I can imagine a very disordered society).
If the book had ended there I probably would have given it 4 stars however the 'self-care' chapter was infuriating. With an air of social media 'expert' it promotes an orthorexic inducing lifestyle and suspicion of medical professionals who have higher qualifications than the author. I would honestly advise against reading this chapter.
In the epilogue, Hill states her aim for the book as making women feel better about themselves. For me that was completely unsuccessful. The only way you can feel good about yourself in light of the advise in this book is if you have a completely restrictive lifestyle.

Reliant on anecdotes not scientific data
There is a lot of information in this book that is verified by solid scientific research, however she delves into anecdotal advice a lot which can be quite unhelpful. Some of the advice is nbased on cherry picked data and her biases do show through at times because of her personal issues.
If it's your first book on this subject, hormones, female health and diet, then I'm sure you will learn a lot but there are better books out there with more qualified and less biased advice.
I find the use of strong language unprofessional at times, though I generally enjoy foul language lol maybe there are more appropriate books for that type of thing.
I was warmed by her consideration for those who don't identify with a specific gender. I did find the over the top sterotypical feminism and politics a difficult read. She does paint women as victims that are blown around by our hormones. Buying into sterotypical views that women feel x at this time of the month and y at this time of the month. Rather than women are influenced by their hormonal fluctuations but not controlled by them. Chapters that revolved around this were difficult to finish and felt very patronising.
If your looking for a friendly chat about hormones then go for it, but if your looking for an informational book backed by science not opinions then there are much better.

Quack quack...
So. Much. Woo. 😔
Save your money and look for a book about the menstrual cycle that sticks to facts and evidence.
There are portions of this book, like the first section, which provide a genuinely helpful insight into how our cycles work from a biological perspective. I did learn a lot about my body.
But (and it’s a big one) beyond that there is so much woo and quackery that I almost couldn’t finish the book (I held out in case there were any more nuggets of useful information - there weren’t)
Beyond the pseudoscientific “treatments” I also find it unhelpful to suggest restricting one’s life and work according to a *largely* arbitrary set of “seasons”. Who in the real world can reorganise all public speaking to land on a handful of days in the month? Or to restrict creativity, socialising, introspection, developing plans etc etc according to someone else’s imposed timetable? I really do find it odd in 2019 to be restricting women to be slaves to the monthly calendar. Feels like a real step away from equality.
And if you don’t believe me about the cycle seasons being largely arbitrary, try the section for those not menstruating (trans/post menopausal etc) which explains how you can just map the seasons into the phases of the moon!
How about this gem: “There hasn’t been much research on [cod liver oil packs], but it’s been used by women for over 100 years and is proven to work” (proven without research???)
If it sounds like a duck... 🦆

Good but also flawed
I did really enjoy the first few parts of this book. And I definitely think women should think more about their cycles so thank you Maisie for writing this. However, I was disappointed that a lot of the advice was rooted in unscientific practises and things that to me seem to steer people away from modern medicine. It was still very informative in some parts hence the 3 star review but I found it to be topped with hooey statements that made me question the overall validity of the book.

I now know my body well than ever before♥️
I really liked it how Maisie makes us feel happy by telling it’s normal to have complicated feelings and there’s always a cure, and I’m glad I found this book. So that I can teach my daughter what she will go through as a woman and how to treat her self. This book is life changing. Thank you very much. And is a nice listen. This is why men say it’s hard to understand women. I’m really proud that god created me as a woman. ♥️
