Oldřich z Chlumu se sice ocitl v nemilosti českého krále, ale přesto je povolán do Prahy, aby vyřešil na první pohled jednoduchý případ. Malostranský špitál vlastní darovací listinu na tři vesnice vystavenou Václavem I., otcem Přemysla Otakara II. a jeho předchůdcem na královském trůně. Král si ovšem nepamatuje, že by kdy jeho otec špitál obdaroval. Královský prokurátor začne případ prošetřovat a narazí na vraždu staroměstské měšťanky, která se nechala vydržovat několika zámožnými muži, kromě jiného i nejvyšším komořím. A ačkoli tomu ze začátku nic nenasvědčuje, Oldřich z Chlumu záhy odhalí, že oba zločiny spolu úzce souvisejí. Pomalu začíná rozplétat klubko složitých intrik, které ho tentokrát zavedou do křivolakých a ponurých uliček Starého Města pražského.
