Publisher's Summary

Another exciting adventure from the number one New York Times best-selling series!

The darkest secrets are the hardest to bring to light....

Sylvestri Yarrow is on a streak of bad luck with no end in sight. She's been doing her best to keep the family cargo business going after her mom's death, but between mounting debt and increasing attacks by the Nihil on unsuspecting ships, Syl is in danger of losing all she has left of her mother. She heads to the galactic capital of Coruscant for help but gets sidetracked when she's drawn into a squabble between two of the Republic's most powerful families over a patch of space on the frontier. Tangled up in familial politics is the last place Syl wants to be, but the promise of a big payoff is enough to keep her interested....

Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh has been summoned to Coruscant, but with no idea of why or by whom. She and her Padawan, Imri Cantaros, arrive at the capital along with Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and his Padawan, Reath Silas - and are asked to assist with the property dispute on the frontier. But why? What is so important about an empty patch of space?

The answer will lead Vernestra to a new understanding of her abilities and take Syl back to the past...and to truths that will finally come out of the shadows.

Don't miss any of the adventure and excitement of Star Wars: The High Republic!

the book is better

While the story isn't amazing or bad it's a book you are required to read or listen to in order to have continuality given the ending and plot seeds it gives for future books.

Vernestra is written terribly as the "she has no flaws" character and Reath has regressed since the previous book.

the Narration is poor, all conversations sounding sarcastic or the tone feels off.

reading the book is a better experience if you can.

Chapters

The book was good, but about halfway through they started saying the wrong chapter numbers. Eg: I’ll be on chapter 40 but the narrator would say chapter 37 instead

Listening issues.

Lacking the usual music, sound effects and character voices and the narrator seems in a rush. Previous High Republic audiobooks were so enjoyable, but this feels like it’s been cheated without all off the backing sounds. Great story, terribly narrated.

MASTER YADDLE!!!! YAY!!!

4.5 Says

Honestly, the first half of the book was quite disjointed, and I wasn't really vibing with it, but all those plot points came together in a significant way. However, I feel that may have been to set up those various plot points. More than that, there was so much lore referenced. For example, in the first chapter alone, there is a very telling line. That even the most passive Jedi were beginning to be more willing to reach for their Light Sabre. In fact, this book actually delves into a change in the Jedi Order.
Finally, we get concealing in Star Wars. I wonder if this vital role is removed because Anakin would have benefited from this.
I don't want to get too into all the Easter eggs I loved but getting Master Yaddle in this story made me unbelievably happy! I won't mention any more, or I will spoil the book.

Regarding the audio quality, the very abrupt chapter changes and I missed the usual music and sound accompaniments of the other Star Wars audiobooks.

Kinda disappointed

Have really enjoyed the series of Audiobooks, however this one misses the mark on production.
Previous books have all been well narrated in different voices with a nice touch of having some backing music/sound effects.
The narrator for this book changes the pronunciation of some vital character names through the series. There also seems little effort to go extra lengths for the character voices and really has me struggling to get through this audiobook. May be petty but would have preferred the same narrator throughout the whole series.

Great story, horrible performance

The voice performance was horrible. Most of the characters sound the same and pronunciation of key words was really off.

I would still buy it because of the story.

underwhelmed

after listening to all of the other high republic audiobooks the production of this book was a let down there where no sound effects to really get you sucked in to the story and the voice actor didn't have different voices. I still enjoyed it because it's star wars but I wish it was better.

Poor story with monotonous performance

Story had no terrible pacing, the first act took up the first three quarters of the book with the last two hurriedly shoved in at the end. the characters feel flat and unrealistic, and the performance is monotonous with no tonal shifts to match the story and the character's feelings. This recording also has no music or sound effects like other Star Wars audiobooks. It's necessary to read for the continuation of the High Republic story, but a complete bore.

Wanted to like it

I really wanted to like this story, but took me about a month to finish it and all in all wish I skipped it. Probably one of the weakest in the high republic so far. But does seem to be setting up the next big book. I like Reath Silas but he got skipped over a lot and Vernestra Rwoh just self-dealts herself most of the book, not great but definitely not a terrible book
