هو في الأصل عبارة عن مجموعة من المقالات نشرت في مجلة العصور بين شهري يوليو (تموز) 1929م، ويناير (كانون الثاني) 1930. جُمعت هذه المقالات في هذا الكتاب لتلقي الضوء على أسلوب من أساليب النقد الأدبي. تناول هذا الكتاب الكاتب العربي المصري "عباس محمود العقاد" على يد كاتب وشاعر وناقد مصري مشهود له هو مصطفى صادق الرافعي. في هذه المقالات التي تمّ جمعها مُثلٌ وعينات تؤول بك إلى حقيقة هذه الأديب من كل نواحيه، وفيها الكثير الكافي.

وفي الدراسةِ التي قدَّم بها الدكتور الطاهر مكي الكتاب (على السفود) يؤكد أنَّ الكتابَ نموذجٌ في النقدِ، يدلُّ على نفاذ الفكرة، ودقةِ النظرة، وسعة الإحاطة، وقوة البصر بالعربية وأساليبها، أما الأسلوب الذي حمل إلينا هذا كله فتختلف فيه الآراء أيما اختلاف، بعضهم يرى أن هذا كله يمكن الوصول إليه في غير هجوِ القول وفحش اللفظ ومر الهجاء، وآخرون يرون أنَّ الزمن يذهب بهذه الهوامش ويبقى الجوهر من هذه المقالاتِ لا يبليه الزمن، خاصةً مع غيرِ المعاصرين وهم بطبيعتهم على الحيادِ بين هذا وذاك.ـ
