About this listen

A predecessor to such monumental works such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Notes From Underground represents a turning point in Dostoyevsky's writing towards the more political side.

In this work, we follow the unnamed narrator of the story, who, disillusioned by the oppression and corruption of the society in which he lives, withdraws from that society into the underground. A dark and politically charged novel, Notes From Underground is Dostoyevsky at his best.

I listen to this before bed, yet still puzzled. Initially I was going to move onto another book. It requires a few listens, the concepts are bizarre at first listen. The direction it takes as well. This is a psyche of a man you may encounter however take a while to fully understand.

This is one of my favourite books. I read it many years ago and enjoyed listening to it this week. Simon Vance captures Underground Man's personality perfectly.

The story is just so funny, especially the first part. How can someone be such a misanthropic loser? Then it dawns on me that the Underground Man is everywhere these days. The internet teems with such folk. That's when the laughing stops.

Hilarious and frightening
