Při vojenské výpravě do Horních Uher se vojskům krále Přemysla II. Otakara podaří obsadit slovenskou Nitru. Správy města se ujímá prokurátor Oldřich z Chlumu. Jednoho rána se na Dolní bráně najde oběšené tělo kanovníka nitranské kapituly. Nitrou se šíří panika, neboť je právě tato brána považována za prokletou. Kdysi zde za podivných okolností zahynula žena, obviněná ze spojení s ďáblem. Stopy vyšetřovatele zavedou k chrámu svatého Jakuba, další pátrání je však přerušeno vraždou. Oldřich z Chlumu má tři dny na odhalení a usvědčení zločince.
