Story
Belinda Neil lived and breathed her high-octane job. She relished her roles as a homicide investigator and hostage negotiator with the NSW police force, but she never knew what her work day might bring. She could be investigating brutal murders such as the De Gruchy killings or, in her negotiator role, persuading the murderous and suicidal to drop their weapons, stop terrorising their families, step back from the ledge.

Story
Dr Dan Pronk served on over 100 combat missions in Afghanistan as a frontline special forces combat doctor, where the casualties he treated were his fellow SAS soldiers and commandos, local civilians and even the enemy. The thrill of adventure and the challenges of battlefield medicine brought out the very best in Dan; he discovered a sense of purpose in pushing his medical skills and courage to the limits. But there was a cost. In this frank memoir, Dan describes the highs and lows of his military-medical career, and the very real toll they took on his mental health and family life.

Story
As a cop, I used to sit on one side of the interview room table facing murderers, child abductors and rapists. Now I'm sitting on the other side: disgraced, forced out of the police and judged to be a criminal. I want to show you what the world looks like from here. Talking to crooks, cops, forensic psychologists, scientists and victims, I've gone back to some of Australia's worst acts of badness. What I've found has made me question everything, including where evil comes from, what drives us to commit crimes and how we can prevent them.

Story
This is the true story of Keith Banks, one of Queensland's most decorated police officers, and his journey into the drug scene as an undercover operative in the 1980s. In an era of corruption, often alone, with no backup, he and other undercover cops quickly learned to blend into the drug scene, smoking dope and drinking with targets, buying drugs and having dealers arrested. Very quickly, the lines were blurred between his identity as a police officer and the life he pretended to be part of.

Very early one morning, Samantha Barlow, mother of two young children, was brutally attacked with a brick on her way to work as a policewoman in Kings Cross. She was left for dead in a park. She could have been any young woman - the attack was completely random. Samantha's husband, Laurence, an inspector used to managing huge police operations, was thrown into the role of caregiver. She went through 22 months of rehab for both physical and head-trauma injuries, and triumphantly returned to work. The couple speak candidly of Samantha's journey over the last four years, and the personal price they've paid to be in the police force.

Jason Fox served with the SBS for over a decade, thriving on the close bonds of the Special Forces brotherhood and the ‘death or glory’ nature of their missions. Battle Scars tells the story of his career as an elite operator, from the gunfights, hostage rescues, daring escapes and heroic endeavours that defined his service to a battle of a very different kind: the psychological devastation of combat that ultimately forced him to leave the military and the hard reality of what takes place in the mind of a man once a career of imagined invincibility has come to an end.

A Must Listen
- By Sav1787 on 11-11-2023
Publisher's Summary
Shaun O’Gorman knows what it’s like to suffer from PTSD, depression, and to battle with suicide. He served a 13-year career as a police officer including nine years as a Police K9 handler. The violence, death, and depravity he saw people perpetrate against each other had a lasting effect on him. It culminated with him lying in bed, with a Glock pistol in hand, trying to find a reason not to end his life. This ended the police career he had dreamed of since he was a child.
For a man coming from a police family where his father served for 42 years this was devastating. The loss of identity was one of the hardest parts to deal with. Shaun couldn’t find anyone who could help him out of the hole he was in, so he spent the next 20 years educating himself on how to beat PTSD and depression. He now takes the lessons learned to help other police, military and first responders deal with the trauma their duties expose them to. He strongly believes that it is possible to prepare yourself for what you will experience in your career to prevent you experiencing what he did. His purpose in life is to help people and make a difference.
Through his business The Strong Life Project, Shaun teaches men how to prepare for the difficulties they will experience in their life. His passion is teaching men to be the best version of themselves possible. Shaun has a strong belief that as men we have lost our way and need to learn how to be the loving, strong and connected leaders our families and society needs us to be. It is time for men to stand up and be counted.

Great real life encounter that had parrallels in my military and life growing up in general.
So often we as men bottle up our emotions and struggles due to what we are led to believe to be weakness.
Shaun shares his raw emotions and experiences and how he's overcome adversity to where he is now in life.
Shaun is well on his way to making a difference in the world of PTSD, anxiety and trauma whilst no doubt leaving a legacy in helping those in need.

Couldn't turn it off and will listen to it again as in many ways relates too myself. I've listened to many books and read others about depression 😔 and can relate to them in ways but this book I really did connect with. Listening to somebody story (this book), the pains suffered, the way that every day is a struggle and the thought of suicide is always there is something that any who has suffered them selfs can definitely relate too. I would definitely recommend to others
