I love this series, BUT...
This is one of my favorite series all around. The narration brings all the characters to life, and I especially love the "old biddies." However, Jemma was exceptionally annoying in this book. She was a jealous clingy girlfriend, acting insecure the whole book long. She over analyzes every single move her boyfriend makes. In one scene she decides to call Devlin and see if he's free. When she can't get ahold of him she decides to pack up her cat, an overnight bag & show up unannounced at his house. She acts like a slightly crazy jealous girl, going back & forth in her mind if Devlin is cheating on her. It's exhausting.. I could have used way less of that. Otherwise I love this series & the rest of it is incredibly enjoyable to listen to!

Another Fun Mystery
Gemma's day ends in murder and the old biddies are very interested in helping to solve it and are getting in the way. Even sweet little Muesli is getting into trouble. What is going on here!! Everyone is giving Gemma problems. And is this the end for Gemma and her boyfriend? Why is he avoiding her? I just love all the characters in these stories. They are lively and full of mystery and fun. You just know that if you visit the Tearoom and surrounding town, you are going to love talking to them all. And Pearl Hunter, the narrator, just makes these characters and stories come alive with her reading. She makes it sound so charming.

Charming Series, But Not Without Issues
I have listened to the prior four books and the prequel as well. This series charming and lighthearted and the narration really makes this series amazing. However, the lead character (Gemma) is not just a flawed character — she’s obnoxious and often unlikeable. I wish the Old Biddies and Meusli the cat were the focus of this series and Gemma were a side character who owns the tea room the Biddies meet in. The romance between Gemma and the detective is tired and uninteresting — especially since Gemma acts like she is a teenager rather than someone approaching 30. If Gemma behaved like an adult, a lot of the tedious aspects of this series would melt away. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will get that kind of character development. Aside from Gemma, this series is so much fun. I look forward to the next installment even if I have to endure the terrible romance and Gemma’s churlish behavior.

I love this series
Another great adventure for Gemma and the 'Old Biddies.' This is one of the better books in the series. What I love most about The Tearoom Mysteries is that they are so funny. I love the humour; in this installment the Old Biddies doing Krav Maga provided plenty of light relief. Muesli also has his fair share of excitement and I couldn't help but laugh at his antics at the nursing home.
On a romantic note Gemma is worried about her relationship with Devlin as he works non stop and acts strangely around her. This story line kept the romance interesting for me. Lincoln, one of my favourite side characters, makes an appearance in this episode as well.
The mystery was fun but complex and it had me eagerly following the clues along with Gemma who seemed to be doing a better job of investigating than the police.
I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy.

Just my cup of tea
This is the 5th Oxford tea room murder mystery and I have listened to all 5 now and really enjoyed the series, I think this one was my favourite for a number of reasons. The biggest one is picturing a group of four little old ladies taking self defence lesson in order to be able to go under cover and questions suspects.. oh and to take on any bad guys that are lurking around Oxford. Very funny. As well as the antics of Mussel the playful cat that gets let lose in a care home, can she find another clue to help Gemma unmask the murder or just cause more embarrassment to her owner.
There was also a number of suspects to keep you guessing until the end. I can't wait for the next book in the series so I can catch up with what seems like old friends.
The narrator was very good and made a good job of giving some of the characters a Russian accent. Well to my untrained ear anyway.

Turning Englishness into squeezy cheese
For a book written in 2018, there is language in here that comes straight out of the middle ages. There is something forced and unauthentic generally about the language of the book, the "forced" artificial Englishness. It's like someone has tried to turn quintessential Englishness into squeezy cheese and is forcing it down your throat. I googled the author and found her to be American.Try it yourself.

I do enjoy these books. The narrator is very good. However at some point I wasn't sure which decade it was set in. Drainpipe jeans! Haven't heard that since early 80's. They would wear skinny jeans of course, especially Jemma who is in her 20's.
