تنقسم الرواية إلى جزئين، الجزء الأول هو ولادة بطل الرواية "يوهانس" وما يحمله والده الصياد البسيط من مشاعر حيال هذه اللحظة العادية في تكررها، المميزة في فحواها، لحظة الميلاد، إحساسه بزوجته وطفله، وحتى القابلة العجوز التي تساعد الزوجة على الولادة، ربطه لحياته بهذه اللحظة بالماضي، بالحاضر في نسق شعري بسيط وموحي... أما الجزء الثاني فهو اليوم الأخير في حياة "يوهانس"، العجوز، الطيب، العنيد. علاقته الدافئة مع زوجته الراحلة وعلاقته المؤثرة بصديق عمره "بيتر"، يظهر في النص عشق الكاتب للبحر والصيد والتفاصيل الصغيرة....

تُرجمَت هذه الرواية إلى أكثر من عشر لغات كما جرى تحويلها إلى عمل أوبرالي حيث يعدّ مؤلفها "يون فوسة" أهم الكُتاب النرويجيين المعاصرين، وقد أطلقت عليه الصحافة لقب "إبسن الجديد"
