عاش موساشي واحدٌ وستون عاماً خاض فيها الكثير من النزالات ضد العديد من المقاتلين الأشاوس، وهزمهم جميعاً، وكان من أفضل المتمرسين على استخدام أسلوب القتال بسيفين في آنٍ واحد. وبعد أن تجاوز عمره السبعة والعشرين ربيعاً بدأ بممارسة طقوس التأمل المسماة (زازن) وافتتح بعدها بعدة سنوات مدرسةً لتعليم فنون القتال..

بعد اعتزاله قام موساشي بتأليف كتاب في فن الحرب والتكتيك والفلسفة تحت عنوان "كتاب الحلقات الخمس" ومازالت تعاليمه تدرَّس حتى الآن.
