يسرد البطل (كامل) رؤية ذكرياته منذ الطفولة حتى اللحظة التي يكتب فيها، فيرجع إلى طفولته الأولى حيث وجد نفسه في بيت جده لأمه هو وأمه المطلقة وقد كان يلتقى الكثير من العناية والرعاية من أمه التي كانت تفرط في تدليله حتى نشأ خجولا ومعزولا عن الآخرين بشكل لافت للنظر.
ينتقل إلى مراحل حياته الواحدة تلو الأخرى، إخفاقه في المدرسة ثمَّ الجامعة، عمله كموظف حكومي، زواجه الذي فشل فيه منذ الليلة الأولى الأمر الذي دفعه ليعرض نفسه على طبيب سيكولوجي والذي بدوره يستغلّه ليقلب أحداث الرواية ويحولها إلى ملحمةٍ إنسانية وعاطفية دامية.
