Why is it easier to ruminate over hurt feelings than it is to bask in the warmth of being appreciated? Because your brain evolved to learn quickly from bad experiences but slowly from the good ones. You can change this. Hardwiring Happiness lays out a simple method that uses the hidden power of everyday experiences to build new neural structures full of happiness, love, confidence, and peace. Dr. Hanson’s four steps build strengths into your brain, balancing its ancient negativity bias, making contentment and a powerful sense of resilience the new normal.

Kabat-Zinn focuses on the 'how' of mindfulness - explaining how meditation brings us into intimate relationship with all our senses, how to establish a formal meditation practice and how to overcome some of the common obstacles to incorporating meditation into daily life in an age of perpetual self-distraction. By 'coming to our senses' both literally and metaphorically we can become more compassionate, more embodied, more aware human beings and, in the process, contribute to the healing of the body politic as well as our own lives in ways both little and big.

Profound
I've listened to this every week since I downloaded it a few months ago, and find it extremely helpful in relaxation and keeping me grounded. I love the tone and cadence of it; it less like a reading and more like an impassioned conversation with a friend. He removes the religious and new-age-y connotations from meditation, and explains how awareness fits in with thoughts, senses, mind and body.

Best and most balanced explanation of Meditation.
Chapter 1 covers a detailed and balanced explanation of mindfulness and meditation and its importance. Best I have ever heard actually.
Chapter 2 is a series of guided meditation designed to teach someone how to focus, concentrate and meditate. During the series the author explains what is going on and why then gives tips to help the beginner understand how to and what is meditation. I particularly liked the raisin meditation. Focusing your mind on an external object can be very helpful before focusing on internal things.

This is really good!
Would you consider the audio edition of Mindfulness for Beginners to be better than the print version?
Yes, for something like meditation, it's more 'real' when you can listen. Also with this book, which I have, you don't get the guided meditations except on c.d.
What about Jon Kabat-Zinn’s performance did you like?
I don't know why one reviewer said it was awful, it was fine, and he does show inflection and passion for it. He is NOT monotone.
Any additional comments?
Listen for yourself, it's a great book for beginners, which I am. Lots of good, easy to understand concepts.

Everyone can get something here!
Everyone could benefit from this content in some way. It describes what most of us crave in our daily lives, but are so removed from the practice of, let alone the idea of, that it is actually difficult to conceive unless one decides to just stop and focus, even for just five minutes. The narration is casual and frank, feeling like a discussion I wish I could have with a good friend.

I didn't know life could get better! My soul yearned for confirmation that 'less is more.' I'm simply amazed, no 'rocketed to the 5th dimension' with this stuff. To live a life conscious of the moment, purposefully , slowly and serenely is all I've ever wanted and this book teaches me how in the simplest of terms. Like, right here, right now stuff, like 'begin where you are stuff, NOW. No thinking necessary 'just be the person/thing that you seek, right now. I am a clinical psychologist working with people experiencing a range of psychological problems, and recommend this to everyone I work with when using mindfulness (which is most people!). It is very easy to listen to, explaining the history and practice of mindfulness in every day life. The first half is a talk about mindfulness, the second half is a series of simple mindfulness exercises. Well worth the money!

Jon's soulful voice soothes and heals while you sit - or lie - and you can do the meditations sitting or lying down.

Helpful, calming book that makes a difference
If you could sum up Mindfulness for Beginners in three words, what would they be?
Calming, useful, easy
What does Jon Kabat-Zinn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
His calming voice really helps you, especially when you get to the meditative exercises as it would have been difficult to read and remember these and then perform the exercises properly - instead, you are talked through it in a clear and reassuring manner that helps you focus on the exercises and perform them properly, meaning that they are much more effective and useful.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were a couple of points when he talked about stress and living in the moment that really hit me hard as I could recognise myself in the negative cycle he was describing and I realised how much that was affecting my life. Before trying this I was sceptical but afterwards I was able to see what a difference it had made and how much better I felt.
Any additional comments?
This book changed things for me dramatically - I lead a busy and often stressful life and this helped me learn how to step away from that and not get bogged down in daily stress and over thinking things but take some time to just appreciate the moment and bring some calm and non judgemental thinking to my day.

An incredible experience
This form of mindfulness is excellent for beginners and more experienced.
It has the BEST guided meditation I've ever had the privilege to experience.
Those who find meditation difficult will not with this as it's as easy as breathing.
No matter how stressed or anxious you are, when you listen to this you will feel the weight lifted off you and taken away.
It's hard not to fall asleep it's that peaceful and calming.
I woke up with my physical pain levels almost melted away.
I cannot remember feeling such a deep levels of calm.
Do not listen to this while driving or needing to drive soon after.
I was left feeling deeply over relaxed, my body felt floppy with no tension in it.
Thank you to Jon Kabat-Zinn for an amazing experience of the deepest relaxation.

Puts you to sleep
While this author is credited with bringing mindfulness to the West, he really isn't the best to give an audible description of it. The first half of this work consists of a description of the purpose and nature of mindfulness meditation, but seems to fail to do that. The author ponders around the subject with no sense of direction and long sentences which change the subject multiple times, making it very difficult to follow what he is talking about. The effect is something that seems more like streams of consciousness than a quality book. It is great if you have sleeping difficulties. I counted the words in a couple of random sentences one was 25 words and another was 32 which demonstrates the poor quality of the use of English to communicate. This author really struggled to get to the point and make a point so his audience understand what is a complete unit of communication. Instead he leaves his audience with vague impressions of what his opinions might be. He doesn't seem very mindful in describing his subject and it would take a Master of Mindfulness to follow.
The second session in the recording is recorded like a leading meditation. I found being talked to in this way while I was meditating very distracting from the present moment and it kept leading me away from being mindful. Get any other book on Mindfulness. This was recommended to me a long time ago and frankly it wasn't helpful as a first book on Mindfulness or for someone now deeply steeped in meditation.
