About this listen

Ard joins the war with an explosive start, the Garrish army is marching through the pass to the ruined Chillwind Fort. The only defenders are Ard and company to hold out until reinforcements can arrive.

Though his accolades are too startling and he draws the attention of The King only for General Trevis to swoop in and send Ard on a mission behind enemy lines. He's to stir up the populace of their rival kingdom to rebellion.

I don't know what's going on with Bruce but this book, Dungeon Diving 201, and Returners Defiance, have all felt pretty lacklustre compared everything that's come before.

The romantic tension has gone from slow and steady builds to sudden jumps. The chapter breaks are in places that break up scenes and switches in PoVs, which would be much more natural and flow better if the PoV switch was a new chapter instead of halfway between. And more subjectively, Ards tendency to not share important information or explore obvious applications of things he's already discovered about his magic, contrasted with his tendency to never admit fault and proudly blunder through ignorance hoping things will work out, is starting to push past 'charmingly flawed' into 'pretentious asshat'. His power is growing larger, but his character is getting smaller.

The narration of this series, I'd give it 6 stars if I could. I've never listened to any other audiobook that even comes close to making the character banter feel this lively and real. The problem is I feel like this is a case of excellent voice actors completely carrying a 3 star book into a 5 star book.

Mixed feelings

5 Books in and so much has happened to Ard that it makes no sense there is no character personality growth or changes, it's so consistent that it makes every single interaction and fight predictable that it becomes patheticly boring. Forcing conflict and interactions due to his inability to find time to train his magic, even getting mentored and making it so obvious to others that he draws attention immediately. My biggest gripe about this series is the repeated cringe jokes and repeated arguments, the voice actors do too good of a job because it makes me angry everytime I have to hear it, Ice cream crap needs to disappear for good

I wish for character growth
