Publisher's Summary

"It is possible to be a Christian without showing the mark, but if we expect non-Christians to know that we are Christians, we must show the mark."

Christians have not always presented an inviting picture to the world. Too often we have failed to show the beauty of authentic Christian love. And the world has disregarded Christianity as a result. In our era of global violence and sectarian intolerance, the church needs to hear anew the challenge of this book.

Decades ago Francis Schaeffer exhorted, "Love - and the unity it attests to - is the mark Christ gave Christians to wear before the world. Only with this mark may the world know that Christians are indeed Christians and that Jesus was sent by the Father." More than ever, the church needs to respond compassionately to a needy world. More than ever, we need to show the Mark.

Compulsory excellence

I’m so glad I listened to this book. Such a needed message for all Christians in all ages. Our behaviour towards our fellow believers must always be rooted in genuine love.

The Heart of the Matter

The subject material of this book is basic but so is the heartbeat also basic to life and no one would argue its importance. Love touches the surface yet also plumbs the depths of all Christianity is designed to be. Our love will not stand the test if superficial or sporadic. It must be stoutly supernatural so that the brethren can rest in it and the world can test us by it. True essentials are here to consider which Francis Schaeffer dicusses in depth. And wisely- not just once. This book will serve well to remind and test our love as we would over the years return regularly to hear it again to assure ourselves that we are not running in vain.

Excellent, Practical, and Thoughtful!

Great classic writing and incredibly practical for today! I particularly enjoyed the thoughtfulness of love and truth and the balance between the two.

Truth, Relevant, Piercing, Convicting

“In John 13 the point was that, if an individual Christian does not show love toward other true Christians, the world has a right to judge that he is not a Christian. Here Jesus is stating something else which is much more cutting, much more profound: We cannot expect the world to believe that the Father sent the Son, that Jesus’ claims are true, and that Christianity is true, unless the world sees some reality of the oneness of true Christians.” For the world today, we need this teaching! The world does not see our love for one another, nor our love for all mankind. What is the mark of a true Christian? Francis Schaeffer spells it out quite clearly in this short, but packed full of truth, little gem of a book.

Read everyday to keep devils away.

This book is brilliant. An articulation of the sharpest point (the whole point) of Christianity that sadly is often obscured by the day to day of living. I don’t know if I’ll actually read this book every single day for the rest of my life (probably just long enough to memorize the key points and then revisit)... but there are most definitely worse ways to spend the time. It’s about an hour long and after you become familiar with the text you can speed up the recording to refresh. My new daily devotion will be this book: or the second half of Schaeffer’s Art and the Bible.

Our Sanctification

Although I have personally met with Francis Schaeffer in Pittsburg Pennsylvania in the 1980's he has my deepest admiration for being a brother in Christ who can express why Christians divide and seldom reunite organizationally or doctrinally. Christian leaders would prefer to maintain purity in the form of programs instead of developing personal relationships with one another. I take John 17 personal and believe I have applied these words on a daily basis because our Lord commands it so.

By what shall all men know that we follow Jesus?

Frances Schaeffer nails it once again, so clearly, so penetratingly, yet so lovingly - what is the mark of the true believer, to other believers and especially to the world?

This is a little book that every Christian must read preferably often. Thankfully I now have it on audio and can make sure I do an annual listen.

great reminder

in this book Schaeffer reminds us of Christ's instruction that the world will know we are his by our love for one another, and the need to follow that command even amidst theological differences. this book is a very good reminder to love other Christians, and Robertson Dean has a great audiobook voice
