About this listen

Maggie Cotton's life is a hot mess.

In one day, she's dumped by her boyfriend, disinherited by her mum, and kicked off the three-year degree course she'd stretched to a decade. And that was before she received the letter saying she owed the government $70,000.

But that's no reason to grow up, is it?

With a decrepit 1960s caravan to call home, Maggie has to prove to her mother she can survive without a safety net, stop her loyal best friend Jen from marrying a scumbag, and convince her sexy workmate Rueben that she's not a walking disaster. For someone who's spent her life avoiding hard work, she sure can move mountains when she's got a little motivation - just don't ask her to move the caravan.

Critic Reviews

'A compulsive and hilarious read. In Maggie, Hartley has created one of those indelible characters of whom we must thoroughly disapprove and yet cannot help but love.' Karen Joy Fowler

It’s a very entertaining book. Characters are easy to love and it’s good for a giggle.

Funny & light hearted

Just wrote the title of this review and realised that fits are probably not funny but neither are the many circumstances that Maggie finds herself in, however, I really did laugh out loud as I walked and listened to this audible book. I though the narrator did an excellent job and the character of Maggie was well established through her interactions with others. The book highlights a number of important social issues but is entertaining and not at all laboured.

Most fun book that actually made me laugh out loud in bed in the dark at 1am because I couldn’t stop listening to it I’m recommending it to ever I know ... thank you so much to the author and narrator for the best time I’ve had during the Covid-19 lockdown. 😊

Best audiobook I’ve heard in a long time. I was googling along the way. A must listen

Great giggle!

The story was a slow start and didn't really go any where. Maggie is a late bloomer and finally finds her way.

The narrator was very stilted to start and find her way about quarter the way through.

Over all it was OK but not great.

I loveddddd this book! It’s truths, awkward bits and jaw aching laugh out loud moments make this story so believable. In fact I’m pretty sure this could have been written about the real lives of many people. Rose Hartley you did great!

This has it all
