بنى "يوسف إدريس" روايته على أحداث حقيقية استلهمها من قصة صديقه المعتقل الدكتور حمزة البسيوني الذي شارك في الكفاح المسلح بالسويس، كما تحولت إلى فيلم بعنوان "لا وقت للحب" عام 1963.
