Publisher's Summary

Looking Good Dead is the second best-selling title in the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series from number one Author Peter James.

When a young woman's body is found butchered in Brighton, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace cannot help but think of his own missing wife and her unsolved fate.

Elsewhere in the city, when Tom Bryce finds a disc left on a train, he simply tries to do the right thing – return it to its owner. But this attempted act of kindness makes him the sole witness to that same vicious murder.

Learning that Tom has made a statement to Grace’s team, the killers have to act. But when they plan the murder of the Bryce family, it’s not just revenge – it’s entertainment.

A very good police whodunit.

Having read many police stories it was good to have a uk based story that was very realistic. The story itself made me antisocial as I couldn't stop listening to it to find out what happened. It wasn't at all predictable and you really didn't know what the ending would be. The description was good and I could really "see" it all happening. It was also good to have a bit of romance that wasn't mushy or unrealistic. When I had finished it I wanted to get the next one in the series straight away!

Excellent - but consider hard copy

Very clever storyline, it makes you feel quite uneasy because the opening scene is not beyond the realms of possibility. Lots of twists and turns, you are never quite sure what the outcome will be. I am a recent convert to the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series and this does not disappoint.
DS Grace droll sense of humour and on occasions self deprecating attitude is very funny and lightens the atmosphere, amidst all the suspense. I would recommend reading this series in order of publishing as it helps you understand DS Grace fully.

Looking Good Dead

This is an excellent holiday listen (or a great book to listen to whilst slogging through a lot of housework, as I did today!)

It starts with a train journey in which a man picks up a CD left behind by someone on a train. From this random event spins an involved and gripping tale that kept me listening to the end of the book (by which time my house was clean and tidy!)

I recently listened to the first in this series of books, and I enjoyed the way that the character of DS Grace is further developed. From the first book, where he is bereft after the disappearance of his wife nine years before, Grace acquires a love interest in this book, which pleased me. I liked the fact that his interest in the paranormal, whilst a part of this book, too, was of no help to him whatsoever!

These books rely heavily on happy coincidence to bump the detective work on, and in this way they are rather implausible, but I'll certainly be listening to the rest of the series!

Excellent story but a bit rushed?

What did you like most about Looking Good Dead?

Like all Peter James books the plot, characters and technical detail are all excellent. However I can't help but feel a little bit cheated. The last third just seemed to roll along as if the author had got bored of the book and just wanted to get the story done with several too convenient coincidences leading to the capture of the bad guys. Still a massive fan though and thoroughly enjoy the audible versions of these books.

Gruesome and violent..

Royce has his work cut-out trying to stop an organised sadistic ruthless sicko, after finding a headless chopped up body of a woman.
PJ's characters are strong and individual, I especially liked the 'weatherman' and the relationship between Kellie and Tom, wonderfully done.
The darkness is tempered by a new team member called Potter he had me laughing, if not feeling a little sorry for him. Royce appears to be trying to move on, though as with the first book, he can't seem to keep away from the clairvoyants or give up hope of finding his missing wife.
I have to say though and I usually whinge that book are overly long and eeked out but this offering seemed a little rushed and because it appeared to end abruptly the story lost a star.
Still I will continue to root for Royce he has got under my skin now.

Very short

Is this only half the book? I found it very short and there is a much longer version on the site as well. Very confusing having two versions.

Enjoyable listen

Would you listen to Looking Good Dead again? Why?

No because the audio files weren't broken up into chapters, so it was a pain trying to find where I had got to before falling asleep.
