About this listen

Detective Superintendent Roy Grace faces his most mysterious case yet in the gripping crime novel Need You Dead, by award winning author Peter James.

Lorna Belling, desperate to escape the marriage from hell, falls for the charms of a man who promises her the earth. But, as Lorna soon finds, life seldom follows the plans you’ve made.

When the body of a woman is found, Grace is called to the scene. At first it looks an open-and-shut case with a clear prime suspect. That is, until Grace realizes there is a darker, far more terrifying alternative . .

Although the Roy Grace novels can be read in any order, Need You Dead is the thirteenth title in the bestselling series. Enjoy more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Dead If You Don’t and Dead at First Sight.

Now a major ITV series, Grace, starring John Simm.

Critic Reviews

Peter James has penetrated the inner workings of police procedures, and the inner thoughts and attitudes of real detectives, as no English crime writer before him. His hero, Roy Grace, may not be the most lively cop, nor the most damaged by drink, weight or misery, but he's one of the most believable
Peter James is one of the best crime writers in the business (Karin Slaughter)
James just gets better and better and deserves the success he has achieved with this first-class series
Meticulous research gives his prose great authenticity . . . James manages to add enough surprises and drama that by the end you’re rooting for the police and really don’t know if they will finally get their men
No one can deny James’s success as a crime novelist . . . The Grace stories almost always go to the top of the bestseller lists, not least because they are supremely well-told. James writes meticulously researched police procedurals, so informed that you can smell the canteen coffee . . . enthralling
In my thirty four years of policing, never have I come across a writer who so accurately depicts “The Job“ (Detective Investigator Pat Lanigan, Office of the District Attorney, NYPD)

great ability to change his voice and pace just right

yes

Any additional comments?

I love this series but have never listened to one on audible before and was nervous it wouldn't be the same but in fact it was just as good as reading it if not better.

how I hate that character Pugh. He reminds of awful Inspector in Endeavour. A sly adulterous annoying weasle . Bump him off and in a bad way.

I just love this series. The characters are great, the narrator is great and the stories are great. I think though that if you only picked this book up without reading the previous ones it would be hard to follow at times, particularly all the references to his ex-wife. That is one part of the series I wouldn't have bothered with, the rest is very easy listening.

The first two chapters, albeit short, of this crime novel simply repeat the protagonist's hurt and fury using the same mundane expressions. And mundane describes the story from therein. The language and characterisations are cliched and the plot such as it is, suggests Peter James was bored witless trying to animate the 13th volume in the series. There are loads more crime writers producing sharply observed, sophisticated thrillers to be bothered with this commonplace effort. The narrator is good although he occasionally over-emphasised words or phrases that distracted from the flow.

Dreary pedestrian yarn
