Publisher's Summary

An Astra Militarum Novel

A celebrated sniper of the Astra Militarum must shift her focus to commanding troops, and dealing with the complications that arise from hard decisions.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a look into the haunted thoughts of a soldier wrestling with the complex realities of a galaxy at war. Every choice she makes has consequences for those under her command.

THE STORY

Transplant. Cadian. Sniper. Legend.

Sergeant Darya Nevic is all of these and more… but behind the stories stands a soldier haunted by the unwelcome fame her successes have brought.

During the Cadian 217th’s assault on the manufactorum world of Attruso, Darya finds herself out of her depth in a war that is fought with words as much as with weapons. As a fearsome winter closes in and her men begin to die around her, she will be forced to confront her doubts and make an impossible choice – to become the figurehead her soldiers need, or to believe the unimaginable promises of the mysterious t’au.

With the fate of her regiment in her hands, which path will she choose?

Written by Rob Young. Narrated by Colleen Prendergast. Running time 10 hours and 28 minutes (approx).

Was an ok Imperial Guard book, nothing special.

The book is ok, nothing great.
The main character is a terrible Mary sue with no character arc, she is perfect when the book starts and perfect when it finishes.
The other characters are mildly interesting and the story is ok but if you want any depth in your story I would go elsewhere.
The worst part is there’s a good source of tension in the dispute between new Cadians and old Cadians but it is completely wasted with the boring main character.
It was ok to listen to but I won’t listen to it again unless I’m desperate, even then I’ll think twice and probably re-listen to one of the other guard books or to the Commissar Cain series.

Solid for Cadian lovers, average for others

Its story has some interesting moments surrounded by forgettably average moments. It has enjoyable descriptions of a bleak imperial world and its interactions with Tau. I don't regret my time with it, but I think its not a book that will stick with me outside of a few key moments.

Black Library's Tom Clancy Wetdream

let's get this done first.
The Preformance was good, was very odd that the reader didn't actually shout any shouted lines but instead whispered them aggressively, but maybe they just have thin walls?

now the actual story. if you want this to be a nuanced look into the opposing sides of Imperium and Tau you'll be disappointed.
while there was a seed of what could've been a Black Library defining anti-war novel, condemning both Tau and Imperium for the waste of lives, human and xenos, where in the end no one truly triumphs in a way that feels *good*.
Instead we get a story about how the imperium fails a planet, Tau come in, help the planet, Imperium comes back and starts a fight.
there's a beautiful moment early in the book where the protagonist and her friend see a Tau firewarrior displaying deep empathy, remorse and respect when investigating where the slaves of the manufactorum were chained and forced to live and that gave me hope. Hope the book dashes against the rockcrete and pisses on.

Honestly it's embarrassing how bad they fumbled what could've been a nuanced, anti-war pro humanity & Xenos novel, but no. they cop-out and it reads (and sounds) like a trashy, pulpy cold war era novel about smashing the evil commies.
