Sookie doesn't have that many relations, so she hated to lose one - but of all the people to go, she didn't expect it to be her cousin Hadley, a consort of New Orleans' vampire queen - after all, Hadley was technically already dead. But she is gone, beyond recall, and she's left Sookie an inheritance - one that comes with a bit of a risk - not least because someone doesn't want Sookie digging too deep into Hadley's past - or her possessions.

Story
Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It's a pretty standard dried-up western town. There's a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There's a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there's new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he's found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own). Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth....

At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

Publisher's Summary
The point is: they saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favour, she obliges - and soon Sookie's in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's supposed to interview certain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave and let the humans go unharmed. But that's easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly....
The Sookie Stackhouse stories are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves, and things that really do go bump in the night.

Not like the TV series, but great all the same!
There are two types of series; one where you can read the books any which way and get the hang of it, and one where the order is important.
The first Sookie Stackhouse book has a nice solid ending, which made me think that order was not important. This one doesn't. OK so the events are all wrapped up by the end of the book, there are so many of them, so quickly, that many questions are raised and its slightly confusing. I'm left with the feeling that some of them will be answered in the next book.
OR MAYBE I've been confused by the True Blood TV series. This book contains elements which were introduced during various TV series in a different order and at different times. Oh and the characters are also slightly different from the TV series with different motivations. Yes I know, silly me, I should've expected that.
This has made it both an exciting AND confusing listen at the same time. Which is fabulous. Quite frankly I was being lazy choosing a book to listen to I thought I already knew (having seen the TV series) but am doing housework so can't have anything on my headphones that requires me to think too much. I realize now that actually it's much more fun to be going "OH HANG ON! WAIT A MINUTE!" than predicting the future accurately.
The narration is great. The are some very raunchy sex scenes handled nicely and the image of Alexander Skarsgård (who plays Erik on TV) dressed in a skin tight lyrca outfit attending an orgy had a smile on my face for the rest of the afternoon ....

Living Dead In Dallas
This is book 2 in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Sookie has been asked to use her mind-reading skills to help the vampires of Dallas, but she takes on more than she bargained for when she agrees to penetrate a terrorist organisation. The Fellowship Of The Sun has swarn to kill all vampires, and those who associate with them. This book is gripping from the start, its intense pace never letting up until the end. Recommended for all those who loved Dead Until Dark. Impossible to put down!

Truly not an experience to be missed!
Any additional comments?
Everything I read I remember, everything I hear I remember...
So as you can imagine I will consume a book and move on never to return, this series of books however are the only ones I have gone back through multiple times. This is because the characters are so intricately designed they become real, the story lines while based in fantasy from the off never fail to surprise and thoroughly delight. I have never had such an all round almost tactile experience from something that I've read to make me come back to them so often and with that first time read anticipation it's nuts because I remember every word already.
They are utterly hilarious, full of blood-pumping action and downright hot in equal measure with so many more facets that will have you also coming back time and again.
The books do not copy the T.V. Show plot line they are completely different the anchors for both being the familiarity of the main characters but both being superb in their own ways.
A definite BUY IT NOW! you certainly will not regret it

Great follow up
I really enjoyed this audio book. I loved the first book, Dead Until Dark, and had the usual trepidation that the follow up wouldn't be as good. Well, not the case with this one. I loved the Dallas setting and there was as much action and steam as the first. Also, Johanna Parker narrates perfectly. The signature voice she gives each character remains constant thoughout the whole book. All in all, a real winner. I couldn't bring myself to press pause on my Iplayer!!! Worth every penny.

Going downhill fast in vol 2 of a series
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, I found it frustrating
What was most disappointing about Charlaine Harris’s story?
Sookie jumped right into two quite obviously dangerous situations in quite implausible ways, and a new supernatural creature was introduced simply as a way to end the story. I felt really disappointed with this weak plot after the excellent volume 1. Lost interest in following the series completely now
What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Excellent dramatisation rather than a simple reading out
Did Living Dead in Dallas inspire you to do anything?
Find a more interesting book to listen to.
