Story
Dish up the red meat, eggs, and whole milk! In this well-researched and captivating narrative, veteran food writer Nina Teicholz proves how everything we've been told about fat is wrong. For decades, Americans have cut back on red meat and dairy products full of "bad" saturated fats. We obediently complied with nutritional guidelines to eat "heart healthy" fats found in olive oil, fish, and nuts, and followed a Mediterranean diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet the nation's health has declined. What is going on?

Almost every day we are bombarded with the seemingly incontrovertible message that we must reduce our consumption of meat and dairy—or eliminate them from our diets altogether. But what if the pervasive message that the plant-based diet will improve our health and save the planet is misleading—or even false? What if removing animal foods from our diet is a serious threat to human health, and a red herring in the fight against climate change.

These “solutions” do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you. Meanwhile, the healthcare industry fails to prevent chronic disease. Rather than showing people how to remain healthy and prevent illness through proper nutrition, the system offers drugs and surgery to manage symptoms.

For most, salt protects against a host of aliments, including internal starvation, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease - not to mention, it tastes great.

Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Eat less, lose more: a mantra few of us would disagree with and one we’ve heard countless times in official health advice. Setting out the case for this ‘ketogenic’ approach to eating, Gary Taubes analyses the bad science behind the nutritional dogma that has brought us to a diabetes and obesity crisis.

Publisher's Summary
Has your doctor lied to you?
Eat low-fat and high-carb, including plenty of “healthy” whole grains - does that sound familiar? Perhaps, this is what you were told at your last doctor’s appointment or visit with a nutritionist, or perhaps, it is something you read online when searching for a healthy diet. And maybe, you’ve been misled. Dr. Ken Berry is here to dispel the myths and misinformation that have been perpetuated by the medical and food industries for decades.

Advice to avoid healthy fats and stay out of the sun has been proven to be detrimental to longevity and can wreak havoc on your system.
In this audiobook, Dr. Berry will enlighten you about nutrition and life choices, their role in our health, and how to begin an educated conversation with your doctor about finding the right path for you.
This book will teach you:
- Facts doctors are taught to think about nutrition and other preventative health measures and how they should be thinking
- Story of how the food pyramid and MyPlate came into existence and why they should change
- Facts about fat intake and heart health
- Truth about the effects of whole wheat on the human body
- Role of dairy in your diet
- Truth about salt - friend or foe?

A well presented exposé
Whilst mostly affirming knowledge I’ve acquired over the last few years simply by giving some new insights, this book is a well constructed, researched and presented low-down on how those on the ‘Western Diet’ got to suffer chronic, non communicable ‘Western Diseases’ and what to do about it.
The book suggestions are also spot-on. I loaded up at least 4 of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Great book - Very eye opening
It's amazing some of the continued non-truths we have, and continue to be told, about our health and wellbeing. I think we know about 10% of the full amount of knowledge we can know about nutrition and the human body, but $$ are stopping the world from acknowledging the mistakes of the past and moving forward.
My only suggesting is to label the chapters in Audible, as these don't align with the book chapters and becomes confusing. Plus, I want to go back and revisit certain chapters relevant to me and read them again, so it would be easier to see exactly what chapter I'm clicking on.

Good Diet Info... But Dangerous Skin Cancer Info.
This book contains useful nutritional & diet information which appears backed up by independent research.
However, I cannot rate this book highly in good concious due to the information the author provided on skin cancer in one of the later chapters.
He suddenly transitions into much more emotive language, describing the link between sun exposure and skin cancer as "BS", among other dismissive phrases.
He says there have been no reliable studies, despite the fact that Melanoma & other skin cancers are significantly more common in Australia, and are diagnosed much more frequently in the fair-skinned demographic.
Australia has a much higher peak UV index of around 15 during Summer, across almost all major cities, which contain most of the population. This is much higher than anywhere in the United States, which only reaches around 11 in the southern most regions (Florida, Texas etc).
The author completely neglects to mention this major demographic trend in Australia, acting as if the link between increased UV exposure and deadly skin cancer is laughable.
This advice is frankly dangerous, and I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to some readers developing and potentially dying from Melanoma due to a false sense of security and lack of care when venturing outside during peak summer UV conditions.

Extremely informative!
I read the Kindle version several months ago and it’s already improved my health. I was excited for a refresher with this audible version.
If you’re not familiar with Dr.Berry from his fantastic YouTube videos you won’t care that the narrator sounds a bit robotic and lacks the personality & charisma of Dr. Berry.
The content is fantastic! Sometimes I was very pissed off reading how decades of bad advice has evolved in the medical community and has personally affected me and my family.
Hopefully Dr.Berry’s next book will be narrated by him...

Awesome Read. Great information in easy language. Every medical professional person should read and question their own understanding of the things they practice. Dr. Berry does an amazing job uncovering some REAL truths in order to really help not only himself but his patients and thousands of others who blindly believed "doctors knew all". They don't and this book helps shine some truths on a few of those areas that more science and research should been taught in medical schools.

I love Dr. Ken Berry!
I’ve listened to Ken Berry on several podcasts, which is how I found out about his book. I enjoyed this book’s content, humor, and simplified debunking of common medical myths. However, I wish Dr. Berry had read it himself. My only criticism is that the monotone voice used took away from the listening experience. However, I’d still recommend this book to everyone I care about.

Amazing book from a groundbreaking doctor in Ken Berry. This guy is a true trailblazer and as a Health Scientist I can tell you his stance of many topics is bang on. A must read.

A Must Read
If you value the life you have or the life you would like to have then this is the book for you. So many of the lies Dr. Berry uncovers have been told to me by doctors. I am now improving my health and weight by following his advise. Thank you Dr. Berry you are the modern day Super Hero

Disappointing
So I'm a big Dr Berry fan and have probably heard most of the content through the countless videos of his that I have watched on Youtube. I know there were lots of issues with the audiobook in who was reading it etc and that he could not do it himself but I was really excited about this book and hoped to share it with my family.
Good points-
Clears so many myths and 'truths' that we have carried for years from older generations and clever marketing. The fattening of animals was a particular 'OMG, well durr' moment!
Bad points-
-Is it just me or does the narrator or at least their voice randomly change on many occasions totally ruining the flow of the book? Like random bits were put in later? The production/editing lets the whole book down here for me.
-Dr B talks about how correlation is not great evidence and can't be used to prove facts yet he does the exact same thing when talking about milk.
-No links or evidence to back him up. I get that he didn't want to bulk out the book with lots of links but surely they could have been given as a pdf or a listed on his website. Again he says the average person doesn't know how to find the good evidence so please show us on PubMed which are good
-He contradicts himself about his own eating! Early on he says how he has nuts every day but later when talking about fibre he tells us he hasn't had any in weeks! I get that this is a second edition but surely these things should have been clarified where his views and experiences have changed over the years.

Read it. Take back control of your health.
I was familiar with Ken Barry's YouTube videos before listening to this book. He is an important member of the vanguard of doctors, specialists, scientists, researchers and even investigative journalists who are smart enough to be able to see the inconsistencies in the science that is currently accepted without question by many members of the medical profession, and who are not afraid to call it out, and have the communication skills to convey that to ordinary folk.
The book was not a disappointment. I did at one point find the repetitive format of each chapter slightly annoying. the same style of opening and closing. Later in the book it did not bother me, I could see the value in the repetition. it underscored the fact that each "lie" may be different, but the problem is also the same one. The fact that doctors don't question what they are told as often as they should. And also that our options are the same when confronted with this. We try to work with our doctor or we find a new one Or we educate ourselves and have the confidence to take our health into our own hands.

Couldn’t listen for more than a few minutes
I was looking forward to the content of this audible book, but it was told by a computer generated voice (if it wasn’t then it was very dull and monotonous) I could not listen any further

Best book ever
This is one of the best books that I have read (or listened to) and I have read a few health books. Absolutely amongst the best. Definitely a must read and keep reading as there is so much information in.

This doctor tells no lies
Great book, well written and narrated. It confirmed many ideas I have gleaned from numerous other sources, this book could save your life or at the very least improve the quality of it, and perhaps extend it. Fascinating facts. Thank you Doctor Ken Berry for these confirmations and sometimes surprising new insights.
