تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في القرن العشرين وتحديداً في العام 1941 إبان الحرب العالمية الثانية واشتداد القصف الألماني على القاهرة التي كانت ترزح آنذاك تحت الاحتلال الإنجليزي في الوقت الذي سادت فيه أجواء انقسام بين المصريين بين متفائل حذر بهتلر الزعيم النازي الذي بلغت أنباء انتصاراته عنان السماء، وبين معارضين بشدة له وللاحتلال البريطاني في نفس الوقت.

بطل الرواية هو (أحمد أفندي عاكف) موظف بالدرجة الثامنة في وزارة الأشغال المصرية يبلغ من العمر أربعين عامًا ولا يزال أعزب، يقطن بحي السكاكيني مع والده ووالدته وله أخ وحيد هو رشدي الحاصل على بكالوريوس التجارة، يعمل محاسبًا بإحدى البنوك المصرية في محافظة أسيوط بصعيد مصر...

يضطر أحمد للانتقال بعائلته إلى خان الخليلي نظرًا لاشتداد القصف النازي على حي السكاكيني، ظنًا منهم أن خان الخليلي أكثر هدوءًا وأقل عرضة للقصف لاقترابه من حي الإمام الحسين ولما أشيع في ذلك الوقت من احترام هتلر للدين الإسلامي ومقدساته... ليفاجأ بعد ذلك بكثيرٍ من الأحداث.
