Publisher's Summary

A private server. A digital playground. An alliance of the world's most sadistic, most depraved minds. A place to bring their prey, to hone their skills.

Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down.

A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs.

But on this server, they don't care about the game. That's not why they're here. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain. Realistic anatomy. The ability to bring their victims well beyond the body's normal breaking point. And most importantly, the ability to bring them back and do it all over again.

Trapped in a bloody, merciless nightmare, Duke only has one goal: to survive. And in order to survive, he must play the game. He must win the game. And to do that, he must become the most cruel, most ruthless monster of them all.

Fantasy Snuff

Dark, depraved and disappointing. Torture, murder, child abuse and cruelty, self harm are some of the themes this book experiments with. Not for something I would ever recommend and definitely not an easy read.

Dark themes, good story, poor ending.

About 20 minutes from the end, I would have said this is a good book with a great story if you don't mind some very dark moments. The book features a significant amount of pain and torture. I'm not really into that sort of thing but was able to skip past those sections and generally enjoyed the book. The overall story - until the ending - is a great, epic tale.

I didn't like the ending. It makes sense, I suppose, given what happens to the main character but it could have easily been done differently. As it is, the book is semi-tragic; albeit with epic scope. It could have been as story of redemption and forgiveness but the author chose not to go in that direction.

So this is a mixed recommendation. If you can avoid the worst pain sequences - the "amplification scene in particular - it's a good book with a great story. Just be prepared for a bit of a sour taste at the ending.

An enjoyable story

The story is good. It’s not my preferred genre, yet it kept me engaged as a once avid gamer. 👍🏼

Not for Snowflakes.

An incredible story from start to finish, the message that I got from the story was of hope, healing and perseverance despite despair.

Disappointing after listening to Crawler Carl

It was good, but it was a bit disappointing after listening to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series - which raised my expectations a bit too high. Great scope though.

meh

it's not on dungeon crawler Carl's level but it wasn't bad. the story would have been better if the narrator wasn't so bland! it didn't matter if it was a female character, if he was being put through pain hell or if he was just having a chat. the voice tone stayed the same.

but apparently dungeon crawler carl book 6 is coming September 1st! so there is that to look forward too!

It’s no Carl

It’s probably great if you like this kind of horror-pain stuff. It’s certainly got the same pile of interesting ideas. But I last less than 2 hours before going, “Nope”. If you are looking for something to tide you over until the next Carl comes out, look elsewhere.

If you like dungeon crawler Carl this is not as good

Definitely not as good as dungeon crawler Carl series, both in story and narration, needless gore throughout.

Great book, on the darker side of things

Again, great book.
however I feel the ending was a little rushed and we missed some of the pieces being put together to really close it out and feel satisfying.

love the writing, love the voice work!
