About this listen

A private server. A digital playground. An alliance of the world's most sadistic, most depraved minds. A place to bring their prey, to hone their skills.

Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down.

A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs.

But on this server, they don't care about the game. That's not why they're here. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain. Realistic anatomy. The ability to bring their victims well beyond the body's normal breaking point. And most importantly, the ability to bring them back and do it all over again.

Trapped in a bloody, merciless nightmare, Duke only has one goal: to survive. And in order to survive, he must play the game. He must win the game. And to do that, he must become the most cruel, most ruthless monster of them all.

If you went into this thinking it’d be like DCC that’s completely on you, and I worry about how well you manage in life. It’s clearly labeled "horror" and "gore", let alone the summary.

Matt Dinniman is a great author and this story is more proof of that. Very well written and engaging, would love there to be a sequel or even a prequel of this universe.

Performance is very good, the characters in this story have gone through some things so I don’t know why you’d expect the performance to be light hearted. Once again, user error.

If you are a fan of Matt Dinniman and can separate fiction from reality I highly recommend this book.

Fans of Carl be warned. This was a stepping stone in the author's development. Before dark humour, there was just dark. Also I think the narrator didn't like reading it. His delivery is giving: "Let's get this over with."

No dark humour. Just dark.

I thought dungeon crawler Carl had some in game trauma, this makes him look like spilled milk!

Absolutely horrific, I love it

I love Dungeon Crawler Carl and thought I’d try this while waiting for the next book. But I just can’t force myself. Not only is the gore level off the charts, and I can handle quite graphic descriptions and fights and battles, but this is also so depressing. I don’t need to listen to this. And the narrator has a lack of emotion. I’m so glad you chose Jeff Hays for DCC. Sorry Matt Dinniman, this one’s a hard no. DNF.

I tried but I can’t

Unfortunately couldn’t handle the narrator very bland lacking any emotion or depth the story seemed interesting. Very gory and a lot of messed up stuff but 🤷🏼‍♂️ that’s in the title.

Terrible narration

Thought I’d drop it after the first couple chapters. Gore and shock horror not my thing at all. Let it play in the background while at work, before I knew it I was invested. Turns out it’s a neat story, well woven. Unexpectedly good. Last 10min fine by me.

More gore than I’d care for, but still good time.

Not very good to be honest. The narrator was boring, and the ending was terrible. Some parts were unnecessarily gross. Note that this is nothing like Dungeon Crawler Carl , so if you're coming here from that, just skip this one.

Far from this authors best work.

What's up with that ending?! No spoilers but I thought it made the whole story kind of pointless.

Not great

About 20 minutes from the end, I would have said this is a good book with a great story if you don't mind some very dark moments. The book features a significant amount of pain and torture. I'm not really into that sort of thing but was able to skip past those sections and generally enjoyed the book. The overall story - until the ending - is a great, epic tale.

I didn't like the ending. It makes sense, I suppose, given what happens to the main character but it could have easily been done differently. As it is, the book is semi-tragic; albeit with epic scope. It could have been as story of redemption and forgiveness but the author chose not to go in that direction.

So this is a mixed recommendation. If you can avoid the worst pain sequences - the "amplification scene in particular - it's a good book with a great story. Just be prepared for a bit of a sour taste at the ending.

Dark themes, good story, poor ending.
