Great novel BUT.........
As usual, Richard Fox has turned out a fantastic novel in the Ember War universe and I enjoyed nearly every part of it but for one. Richard, if your ever going to use Australians again PLEASE don't use Barry McKenzie as a reference point for how we Australians speak, 99.9% of the dialogue used was pre-1970 if not earlier, it was so bad that I fast forwarded through it.
I'm not even going to mention Luke Daniels attempt at an Australian accent other than to say my ears are still bleeding.
The above two points aside, GREAT read, enjoyed it very much.

Absolutely hands-down favorite
Richard Fox is amazing. After listening to the Ember Wars I tried several other sci-fi stories. I was disappointed over and over, I then listened to some of my favorites (so I thought) from the past few years, they were also disappointing. He is just a freaking great author. An abundance of adventure, the right amount of humor and outstanding character development. Luc Daniels nails it. As far as this type of sci-fi space adventure, they have set the bar.

Old war vet recommends
Any additional comments?
Made this old war vet cheer.. and I won't deny it jerked a few tears. Author gets it. Can recommend as outstanding.
This book has some really cool tech, but that's just the surface layer. Underneath, it effectively breaches subjects that are difficult to convey; the warrior spirit, faith, and honor. I ended my watch decades ago but the essence of Shaw's transformation was familiar to me. It speaks to these old ears, and would speak to ancient and distant future warriors alike. Sierra Hotel, Mr. Fox. You've reminded me I have iron.

Give it a chapter or two
I nearly shut this book off and asked for a refund in the beginning. Seemed to be long on description rather than story and lacked a hook to drag me into the story. Eventually, it hit its stride and settled into a jaunty pace that while long on descriptives brought in enough character and plot that I began enjoying it. If it means anything, I am going now to get

Excellent ground forces sci fi tale
While not the most complex read, this novel kept my attention with its decent but not overwhelming detail of the various combat technologies used in its universe, as well as the very well fleshed out history of how humanity survived two alien invasions. The addition of the Iron Legion's religion was also a pleasure to read.
The only weak point for me in the story was how naive the main character is about combat, the military, and the history and culture of Earth's alien foes and friends. It took me some suspension of belief to ignore how a rather whiney and very unprepared young man somehow makes it through the training to join a kick-ass branch of cybernetic Marines. The lieutenants that train him and his care are certainly fleshed out to be very professional, but the main character really didn't come across as having the "right stuff"; only a very lucky chance encounter at the very beginning of the tale and a small religious "miracle" involving water dripping off a revered statue made the character stand out as being really exceptional in any way. He needed more of an edge, in my opinion.
Other than what I felt was a little weak characterization on the main character, the story was a very good read.

Great Start to this Follow-on Series
This series follows the Ember War series which I have not read (but now plan to depending on how the rest of this goes).
The writing is well done, dialog is believable and character development is deep and satisfying. There is a good amount of technical detail to keep me interest and thinking while not getting into babble or fall into the near magic classification.
I scope of this particular book is confined to the recruitment and training of the main character and the author does a good job keeping the action going (even if you know how it'll end). I look forward to the next book and hope it expands it's reach while keeping it as personable as this one.
The narrator is great and really brings the characters to life.

Like eating spinach when I was 6 years old
no. NO . I can't. No more! No matter how much I tried, I just can't get this down. Listening to the narrator voice the characters is like forcing myself to eat spinach when I was 6 years OLD! { whimpering) it just doesn't taste good. You know when someone tries too hard to put on an accent that it's obviously fake? The narrator's efforts makes cartoonish, an otherwise promising story. Waste your money if you want, don't say I didn't warn you.
