مثل أغنية عراقية حزينة، يغنيها البطل، ومن دون إثارة للدهشة أو لكبير الفضول تنساب كلمات هذه الرواية التي تعرض واقع هجرة الشباب العراقي تحت نير استبداد حكم حزب البعث أواخر سبعينات وأوائل ثمانينات القرن الماضي إلى مختلف دول أوروبا وخاصة بريطانيا، عبر محطة دمشق، عن طريق تتبع حكاية شاب عراقي من أحزمة الفقر على أطراف بغداد، اسمه (علي سلمان) يضطر للهجرة إلى دمشق أولاً، هرباً من تنكيل مخابرات بلده به رغم أنه مستقل، وبحثاً عن لقمة عيش كريمة يستطيع بها مساعدة عائلته الفقيرة.

لا يجد علي مثل معظم العراقيين المنفيين في دمشق، ما يحقق له الأمان رغم طيبة ومساعدة الشعب السوري له فلا يسع الشاب الموهوب في الغناء، والذي كان قد تزوج من فتاة عراقية لاجئة، إلا السعي للرحيل إلى أوروبا كمنفى أكثر أماناً وإنسانية.

ولأن المنفى له شروطه القاسية في صعوبة إيجاد العمل وفي الآثار النفسية التي يخلقها التعامل مع بيئة مختلفة، يعيش علي مأساة إصابة زوجته بالاكتئاب، والكثير من الأمور التي تصادف أيّ شابٍ مثله في المنفى البعيد والبارد.
